NO THANKS: Brooks Koepka Refuses to Wear a Mic
Now that the PGA TOUR is back in full swing, you would think that there would be a ton of excitement and less animosity surrounding the game of golf. But a few of the new changes in golf broadcasts are definitely causing some tension with players.
Golf came back to the national airwaves this past Thursday at the Charles Schwab Challenge and with everything going well there, fans were ready to move on to the RBC Heritage that just kicked off.
But even with the excitement of the game being back, there are still some uneasy feelings out there among some of the professionals. Most notably is the issue surrounding players being mic’d up.
While some players have embraced the idea of getting their on-course personalities out there for the fans to see, there are a lot of players that have resisted the idea. The most vocal in opposition to wearing a mic on the course has been Brooks Koepka. As most of you probably know, Koepka isn’t shy when it comes to sharing his opinion and he really gave some strong words on this topic.
“I don’t understand why they want us to wear a mic when there’s a boom mic that stands 10 feet away from every shot that I hit,” Koepka said. “If the announcers would just shut up and listen, you could hear every word that we’re talking about. I don’t understand what the thing is. Half the time the lady’s holding a boom mic, and she’s listening to everything we’re saying all the way down. If they would just shut up, they could hear everything.”
While Koepka might be making a good point about not even needing the mic attached to the players themselves, one has to think about other consequences these mic’s may cause.
We just saw on Thursday that Adam Hadwin was caught discussing if he had committed a penalty, which is a pretty serious moment that might not be helped by having to mince words for the cameras. There could also be some personal conversations that players don’t want to have picked up on a weekly basis.

Overall, it seems as though the fans think that having players mic’d up is a big hit while some players are a little more apprehensive about this. Hopefully, this won’t turn into a huge issue moving forward and the PGA TOUR and the players can come to a solution that is in the best interest of all involved.
