Jay Monahan, commissioner of the PGA Tour, has announced updates on the COVID-19 situation surrounding the Tour.

Monahan has confirmed that the PGA Tour will go on and continue the schedule put into place during the break. They are confident in the protocols they established during the break and believe the “bubble” is a safe environment for the players, caddies, and other essential staff members.

The Commissioner has also confirmed that Cam Champ, Brooks Koepka, and Graeme McDowell have withdrawn for the Travelers. He adds that Brooks’ brother Chase, along with Webb Simpson have WD’d as well. They have both tested negative, but are withdrawing to stay safe.

Over the first 3 weeks back, the PGA Tour has conducted over 2,200 COVID-19 tests, with 7 of them coming back positive.

When asked if the Tour is mindful of their reputation as cases around the country grow in number, Monahan stated that the Tour feels a responsibility to inspire fans around the world and believe they are on a path in which golf can continue to happen.

He emphasized on multiple occasions that the protocols in place are  being taken seriously, and he believes in them fully. He did say, however, that he has noticed some people taking the situation lightly on a few occasions. He mentioned that when you’re in a “bubble” of people that have all tested negative, it’s easy to become relaxed around each other.

Monahan also gave an update on the Memorial happening in a few weeks, and said the plan remains the same. At this point, a certain amount of fans will be allowed on the grounds during tournament play. This plan set in place by the Tour has been approved by local and state health officials.

A few changes to the existing protocols include..

  1. On-site gym. The fitness trailers will be returning next week to prevent players from using off-site gyms.
  2. Player coaches are now going to be in the testing bubble.
  3. Additional tests will be conducted when arriving at the new venue each week.
  4. In order for players to receive a stipend, they must follow all guidelines established by the Tour.

If someone is found not following all guidelines and adding potential danger to the situation, there will be serious consequences.

For now, golf will go on as scheduled. Let’s hope it stays like that.

I grew up in southern New Hampshire, where I first fell in love with the game of golf. I started by just going out and messing around with my buddies and focusing purely on having a good time! I never took golf seriously until I moved down to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida. Go Bulls! At the start of my junior year I got a job working as a cart boy at a local private country club. This is when I started to focus on golf becoming my career. During the fall of my senior year, I turned from a 14 handicap, to a 2. I passed the PAT scoring test my first try and haven't looked back.
