2020 Workday Charity Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

So where do you stand on golf’s great debate right now?

Do you applaud Bryson DeChambeau’s progressive approach to physiology, his hard work in gaining muscle mass and adding 50 yards to his game?

Or do you deplore the way that modern golf is going, with bomb-and-gouge seemingly now the name of the game ahead of silky ball-striking?

Either way, it’s hard to contest the argument that Bryson is very much the man to beat in world golf right now, and when his short game fires at tracks where he has room to blast 350 yard drives he is going to be very, very difficult indeed to stop.

For critics of the Scientist, we’ve got good news in that a) he isn’t teeing up at the Workday Charity Open this week, and b) the event is being played at a classic golf course where old-fashioned skills like hitting the ball straight and true are rewarded.

Bizarrely, DeChambeau version 1.0 actually won at Muirfield Village – host of the Memorial Tournament – in the past, but that was when he was focused on his precise tee-to-green game, and it’s actually the identity of last year’s champion (Patrick Cantlay) and the 2017 winner, Jason Dufner, are more reflective of this golf course.

Incidentally, if the name ‘Charity Workday Open’ is a new one for you, maybe don’t get too attached – this is scheduled to be a one-year only tournament to cover for the John Deere Classic, which has been cancelled in 2020 owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

But yes, we’re at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, and this is arguably the finest venture into golf course design from Jack Nicklaus, who as you might expect was keen to put an emphasis on quality ball-striking.

And that is the order of the day here. The tree-lined fairways are of an average width but the rough is typically penal, and so anybody trying to cut corners is suitably punished. Fairways and the edges of greens are protected by dozens of bunkers and a considerable watery presence.

At the 2019 Memorial, eleven of the eighteen holes played over par, and the main reason this layout sees winning scores in the late teens under par is because of the ease of the four Par 5s, which really are birdie-or-nothing tests.

The other chief defense of the course is wind, but that looks set to be a gentle breeze this week, and with scattered thunderstorms promising some rain, the Bentgrass/Poa greens could play quite soft – elevating the advantage of smart iron players.

So is there a long-odds outsider that can take care of business this week? Let’s take a look in our Workday Charity Open 2020 sleeper report.

Workday Charity Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

Adam Hadwin – 50/1 – There was a welcome return to form for Adam Hadwin at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, a player who had been grinding away since golf’s resumption.

The Canadian loves Bentgrass/Poa greens and has a habit of serving up his best golf on courses that are considered less-than-driver, and so in truth we were expecting a better record than he has at Muirfield.

But he does have a T11 here in the past, and he can match that at the very least this week based on his ball-striking at Detroit GC, where he finished T4 on the back of ranking second for GIR.

A former winner at Innisbrook, Hadwin is more than capable of compiling a low score on a track where tee-to-green prowess is key.

Matt Wolff – 66/1 – It’s amazing how often a player who has putted like a wizard for 54 holes then falls apart on Sunday.

That was the sorry state of affairs for Matt Wolff, who held a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic before feeling the pressure of Bryson’s onslaught too much to bear.

You’d like to think he’ll take the positives though, because this is a young man who is typically excellent from tee-to-green – improvements with the putter are eye-catching indeed.

Wolff is at the point in his young career where he will be ready to go well I consecutive weeks, and Muirfield is a course that he should enjoy.

Scottie Scheffler – 70/1 – It’s been a spell in the doldrums for Scottie Scheffler, but his game well and truly clicked on Friday.

His round of 65 was among the very best of the day at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and while it wasn’t enough for him to make the cut it was a huge stride forward in his development.

A fine tee-to-green player when on it, Scheffler can look forward to better things now – starting with this week at Muirfield.

Maverick McNealy – 125/1 – The Californian is, unsurprisingly, most at home on Bentgrass/Poa greens and he made that count in his T8 return in the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.

The youngster has a liking for difficult courses too, having banked T11 at the Honda Classic, and as a prolific birdie-maker on Par 5 holes he certainly has the profile to succeed at Muirfield.

With three rounds of 68 or better last week, McNealy is ready to strike.

Mackenzie Hughes – 200/1 – This is an extraordinary price for a player who has finished solo second at the Honda Classic and T3 at the Travelers Championship in the past few months alone.

The Canadian is hit-and-miss in his form, but with an excellent short game he finds a way to make it work for him at all manner of layouts.

This is a wager that is something of a shot in the dark, but a player who has finished inside the top-three at relevant courses surely has to be a must-play at 200/1 with the sportsbooks?
