Prayers up for Tiger Woods // Plus More From Around the World of Golf
Yet another good finish this weekend at Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational. It really is remarkable how excellent the state of the PGA TOUR is. There are so many good players, so many good fields, and it seems like every week comes down to the wire.
Max Homa, the LA kid who grew up going to this tournament, the twitter phenomenon, and now 2-time TOUR winner, got it done in a playoff over Tony Finau. Usually, I would say that Finau choked another one away, but he shot a 5-under 66 on Sunday and only was in a playoff because Homa missed a 3 footer to win on 18. That being said, you’ve got to feel bad for him, posting his 21st top 10 finish since his last win (21 more than the next player on TOUR). There is a lot to dive into this week, so let’s get started with the disheartening news that came out yesterday about the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods.
Prayers up for Tiger Woods

It was hard to believe the news that Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident on Tuesday morning in Los Angeles, just a day after he wrapped up being the tournament host at the Genesis Invitational. I was in my Sports Law class when I got the notification, and simply couldn’t focus the remaining hour. It seemed like when he took the Master’s win in 2019 that we were past the adversity that he had to go through to get back on top of the golf world. I think everyone is very grateful that Tiger is going to be fine, but a shattered ankle and two fractured legs (one of them a compound fracture) makes you wonder if he could ever get back to a point where he can compete on TOUR. We’re far from thinking about that, but in the meantime, prayers up to Tiger Woods and his family during his recovery. Get well Big Cat.
Who will Get Puerto Rico Cursed This Weekend?
In the tournament’s history, no player has won the Puerto Rico Open and gone on to win in the U.S. on TOUR again. Sure Viktor Hovland ended the curse and won on TOUR this winter at the Mayakoba, but that was in Mexico so we are going to stretch the curse out a bit. The most notable person to have been cursed by this tournament is Tony Finau, who won it back in 2016. Like I mentioned earlier, it was Finau’s 21st Top 10 finish since that win in 2016. Let’s hope your favorite up and coming young guy that isn’t playing in the WGC doesn’t win this week. My prediction? Will Gordon.
The Crazy Story Behind The Concession Golf Club’s Name
This week’s venue for the WGC Workday Championship is a Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin creation that was built in hopes to host Ryder Cups and Major Championships one day. That dream hasn’t exactly come to fruition, but this is a big week to showcase why it is deserving.
Opening in 2006, The Concession Golf Club was named after the famous “concession” during the 1969 Ryder Cup. Going up against Tony Jacklin, Jack Nicklaus holed out for par with the match all square, leaving Tony Jacklin with a difficult 3 footer for par to halve the hole. Instead of having him putt out, Nicklaus gave him the putt and was later quoted, “I don’t think you would have missed it, but I wasn’t going to give you the chance, either.” One of the all time baller moves from the golden bear, and that is where the name, “concession” comes from.

Any time a new course works its way into the PGA TOUR rotation, I’m excited to see how it plays out. A 7,500 yard course with greens that get rolled twice a day and are surrounded by some of the most treacherous bunkers in the world? Sign. Me. Up. I’m expecting a winning score in the single digits under par, so buckle up for a fun week in Bradenton, Florida
