Coming into the 2017 PGA TOUR season, scoring a 59 at a Tour event was still considered to be a remarkable accomplishment.  Since the turn of the New Year, however, there have already been two players on the Tour who have produced a 59 in a tournament…and it’s only January!

Last week, Justin Thomas carded a 59 when playing the first round of the Sony Open.  This week, little-known Tour player Adam Hadwin joined the ever growing (yet still uber-exclusive) club by carding his 59 in the third round of the CareerBuilder Challenge.  And surprisingly, this was not the first time that a player had even shot a 59 in this tournament.  David Duval put up the same score in his final round to win the previously named Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in 1999.

Hadwin was able to accomplish his 13-under round with two distinct birdie streaks.  He birdied six straight holes, seven total, on the front nine, followed by a five birdie streak, six total, on the back nine.  Hadwin was going into his last hole where he made a three-foot par putt.  He said after his round:

“I was shaking, I really was. I knew what was at stake. The last thing you want to do is miss a three-footer for 59.”

After surviving the par-saving putt at the end of his round, Hadwin was finally able to cherish the moment.  When describing his round, Hadwin stated that “I got away with a few shots on the back and for whatever reason any time I hit a putt it went in.  Everybody talks about you being in the zone, it’s your day. It was my day.”

What makes Hadwin’s performance even more impressive is the fact that he did it with new clubs.  This is the first year in his career that Hadwin has used Callaway gear in competition.  After the flawless round he put up today, it seems safe to say that he won’t be moving away from the Callaway brand anytime soon.

After carding his 59, Hadwin is heading into the final round of the CareerBuilder Challenge with the lead.  Only time will tell if his incredible third round score will carry him to his first ever PGA TOUR victory.
