Adam Scott Says ‘No, Thank You’ To Olympics
Golf in the Olympics is finally back after being absent for over one hundred years. Most players, fans, and media are excited for the ‘summer of golf’ to kick off in just a few short weeks. The Olympics has caught quite a buzz so far this season and all of the players who are currently qualifying for the limited spots are extremely excited. Well, most of them at least.
This week Adam Scott announced that he will not be playing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio due to a busy schedule. Scott said, “My decision has been taken as a result of an extremely busy playing schedule around the time of the Olympics and other commitments, both personal and professional.”
Most of the world has already pinpointed Team Australia to be the favorite with a Scott-Day duo. Instead, the next ranked Aussie, Marc Leishman, will step in to fill some pretty big shoes. Scott already has two wins on the season after a T2 finish before that back to back victory run in Florida not too long ago.
Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt was quoted, “We’re obviously disappointed Adam will not play because he’s one of the best players in the world but we understand his position.”
I checked out his schedule and he’s pretty free for the three weeks between the PGA Championship and The Barclays. I get it, the travel is stressful and your in contention for a FedExCup, but its a once in a lifetime opportunity to win an Olympic Medal, in my opinion.
The big event kicks off in just a few months and most countries lineups have been solidified, however final qualification ends on July 11th. We know that Rory has chosen to play for Ireland as opposed to Great Britain and that Vijay Singh bowed out due to fear of catching the Zika virus. Fair enough.
Despite Scott stepping away (and Australians being really bummed out), a Jason Day/Marc Leishman tandem sounds like a pretty dominating team. You never know in golf. Its a shame we won’t get to watch one of the best players in the world with one of nicest swings in the game play in the Olympics. I just hope the trend doesn’t continue with some of the other qualifying players.
Until August…
