Rory McIlory Deutsche Bank ChampionshipIn just five holes, Rory McIlroy overcame a 3 stroke deficit to take the lead in Monday’s final round the Deutsche Bank Championship; the second installment of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.  After almost giving the tournament away to Louis Oosthuizen in the final two holes, McIlroy went to on to shoot a (-4) 67.

The win shoots McIlroy to #1 in FedEx Cup Standings and ties him with Tiger Woods as the only two players on Tour this year to win three times.   The win also makes McIlroy a landslide favorite for 2012 Player of the Year and gives him a comfortable cushion as #1 Ranked Golfer in the World.

“I didn’t finish off the way I would have liked,” McIlroy said, “But I got there in the end. I’m very happy.”

With the win, Rory McIlroy becomes the youngest player (age 23) with five PGA Tour wins since Tiger Woods notched15 wins at age 23.

Oosthuizen, who finished runner-up to Bubba Watson in the 2012 Masters, fought back with two birdies to get within one of McIlroy.  Failing to capitalize on McIlroy’s bogey on 17, Oosthuizen couldn’t drop his birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff.

“I probably made all my putts yesterday,” Oosthuizen said after falling short by a stroke.

Tiger Woods fought hard early to remain in the hunt, though he never got closer than three shots until a two-putt birdie on the par-5 18th gave him a 66.  After finishing in third place (-18) he notched another milestone, as he became the first player to surpass $100 million in PGA Tour earnings.

Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker finished strong enough to be considered as Ryder Cup Captain’s picks, which Davis Love III will announce on Tuesday morning.
