Bubba Watson to Retire if He Reaches World Number One
Current Hero World Challenge winner Bubba Watson has admitted that he would retire if he ever reaches number one in the official world golf rankings.
Despite winning world ranking points after clinching a three shot victory at Albany this week, the American still sits firmly in fourth place, behind Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
However the world number four has claimed he will leave the sport if he ever reached top spot.
He said: “If I ever become No. 1 in the world, ever, somehow, I’m walking away. I’m going to walk away on top.”
Watson has previously stated that ten U.S. victories will trigger his retirement, with his recent victory and with the Thailand Golf Championship on his schedule, it is thought that he could attain No. 10 by just next week.
However, the American does not agree.
He said: “Ten U.S. victories,” he reasoned. “I don’t count this as a PGA TOUR victory. It counts as a victory. It’s very big for my career personally, but I don’t see it as 10 … I still need two more.”
If Watson’s form continued the way it was last week, it would not come as a surprise to see him in contention for the number one spot next season.
