Can Jason Day Get Better?

After this past weekend it appears that he doesn’t need to.  All he needs to do is keep on doing exactly what his is doing now and he will stay the #1 player in the world.  If he continues playing at this level I believe he will get better and I also think that at the moment he has something none of the others have; a burning desire to win.  I haven’t seen that kind of desire and intensity since Tiger Woods.

At this stage I think it is quite premature to start comparing him to Tiger.  When he gets five or six more majors we can start thinking about it, but for now he is looking strong.

On a desire intensity level I rank the top players the same way as the world rankings:

  1. Jason Day
  2. Jordan Spieth
  3. Rory McIlroy
  4. Bubba Watson
  5. Ricky Fowler

From a pure desire and intensity level Jason Day has a big lead and Jordan Spieth is way ahead of the other three.  This isn’t a talent ranking, but talent alone doesn’t win golf tournaments.

Bill Harmon had this to say about him and being part of the Harmon family has seen his share of great players:

“He’s not afraid to express his aspirations.  He’s about to separate himself from the others at this point in his career.  He practiced at Toscana CC a few years ago and I’ve never seen anyone come close to working harder than Jason Day.”

He went into more detail about how Day spent his practice time and it was as good as it gets.

There is one thing that Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus had in common and Tom Weiskopf summed it up with his comment
about Nicklaus:

“Jack knew he was going to beat you. You knew Jack was going to beat you. And Jack knew that you knew that he was going to beat you.”

Jason Day hasn’t achieved that level yet, but if he keeps winning his confidence will increase and he will get there. At any rate it is going to be fun to watch.
