D.A. Points Wins Puerto Rico Open

While Dustin Johnson was dominating the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship, many other golfers were playing in the Caribbean, looking for a win in the Puerto Rico Open.  And while Johnson took the win on the mainland, D.A. Points was able to find a victory on the island.

Heading into his final round of the tournament, Points started off on fire with five straight birdies to begin his round.  This launched Points into a quick lead but he began to sputter.  Even though he wasn’t able to keep up his fast pace, Points was able to scratch together enough par saves and a few birdies to hold on for a two-shot victory.

The win marks Points’ third victory on the PGA TOUR, after winning at Pebble Beach in a 2011 pro-am with Bill Murray as his partner and taking the title at the Houston Open four years ago.  While his win at the Houston Open catapulted him into The Masters, this victory will not do the same since it was played the same weekend as a World Golf Championship event.

While this win will not push Points into a chance to compete in a major championship, it does still mean a lot to him.  Points lost his PGA TOUR card a year ago after failing to meet the sufficient standards.  With this victory, however, Points has now gained a two-year exemption that will allow him to keep competing on the Tour.

After he took the victory, Points talked about the trials and tribulations that he had to go through during his final holes to win the tournament. “Golf is like that, right?” he said, “You have highs and lows and rarely do you just play every hole perfect.  To bounce back after kind of a rough stretch there, I’m really proud.”

Now that Points has locked down his card for the next two years, he can now relax and hopefully continue to produce victories that will bring him back to the higher ranks of the PGA TOUR.
