Daring Baby Fox Steals Golf Ball Right Off the Green

Since the game is played along tree lines and water hazards, it is typical for wildlife to get in the way of a golf round. For one golfer, however, that meant that he had to lose a golf ball after a good shot.

On Wednesday, Hank Downey of Springfield, Massachusetts was enjoying a round at the Springfield Country Club until he approached one of the greens. Preparing to chip-up onto the green, Downey noticed that there were two foxes sitting around the fringe. Downey figured once he hit his shot, the ball would cause them to move away. Boy was he wrong.

After hitting a pretty solid chip that landed on the green, one of the baby foxes sprinted out onto the green, picked up the ball in his mouth, and ran away with it.

Downey had no idea how to count the shot because he’d never experienced it before. Luckily for us, one of Downey’s group was able to catch the whole thing on video for the public’s enjoyment.

Amazingly, Downey says he hasn’t been the only victim of these thieving foxes. “They’ve been at the course all summer,” Downey said of the foxes. “I’ve seen up to five of them at a time. I’ve heard the story of them doing the same thing to other golfers’ balls.”

It has been quite the year for animal stories on the golf course, and now we can add foxes to the list of perpetrators.

If this story tells you anything, it should be that you have to be on the lookout when you’re on the course. You never know what else could be eyeing your ball as it heads to the green.
