Day Takes World Number One Spot After WGC-Dell Match Play Victory
After a week full of exciting match play in Texas between the top golfers in the world, it was Jason Day who came out on top, in more ways than one.
Day claimed a back-to-back victory at the WGC Dell Match Play after beating Louis Oosthuizen by 5&4 in the Championship match, which secured him the title for the second time in three years, alongside claiming the world number one spot.
The Australian did not earn glory the easy way at Austin Country Club, as his road to the final included him defeating Graeme McDowell, Thongchai Jaidee, Paul Casey, Brandt Snedeker, Brooks Koepka, and even Rory McIlroy in a wonderfully exciting semi-final – where Day rolled in a putt from 13 feet on the final green to take the match by a hole.
Despite being in strong form heading into the five-day event, his tournament future was quickly under-fire after suffering from a back injury on day one.
However, the new World Number One continued to compete, and in a way which could not be rivalled.
Day said: “It’s really tough. A lot of people don’t realise that I get here two or three hours before my tee time, try and get therapy and I’m there like another hour after my rounds trying to get therapy. I’m in between rounds trying to get therapy. It was a little tight late on in the week, but for the most part it really didn’t affect me too much over the weekend.
“It feels great to do this. I just kept rolling on from last week.”
With this win, the back-to-back victor will be heading into Augusta National as the top ranked player, and it is safe to say that if his form continues in the major, it will be very hard to stop this man from claiming his first Green Jacket.
Talking about the upcoming major, the 28-year-old said: “It would be great to win Augusta but I’ve got to make sure I get in and do the little things that count towards the big picture.
“That’s my preparation in getting ready for that week. Rest and recovery next week is huge for me, because it has been a long week and a long two weeks. I will get down there this Thursday and try and do the same old things and hopefully I can pull out a win.”
