Europe in Control Heading into the Final Day in Malaysia
After an impressive first round of fourballs on Friday, Europe are in the driving seat heading into the final day of the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia after gaining 4 1/2 points in the second day.
Darren Clarke’s side won four of the six games of the day and secured another half, matching Fridays performance and extending their lead to 9-3.
Ian Poulter was the first player to help put Europe’s first point on the board in the foursome matches, just like he did on Friday.
The Englishman, who was playing alongside Danny Willett, beat Byeong-hun and Thongchai Jaidee 3 and 2 in the first match of the day, and will be leading out the European Team on Sunday when he plays Danny Chia in the first of 12 singles matches.
Bernd Wiesberger and Ross Fisher claimed a second victory for Europe after beating Jeunghun Wang and KT Kim by two holes, after loosing after the first hole.
Europe experienced a set back in the day after Chris Wood and Kristoffer Broberg were defeated by two holes by Kiradech Aphibarnrat and SSP Chawrasia in the third game of the day.
Despite this, Andy Sullivan and Shane Lowry, who played together for the second time, beat Prayad Marksaeng and Shingo Katayama by 3 and 2, claiming another victory of the day.
The best performance of the day came from Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick, who eased a 5 and 4 victory over Anirban Lahiri and Ashun Wu.
Similar to Friday, Victor Dubuisson and Soren Kjeldsen were part of the closest game of the day, which resulted in a half, against Chia and Nicolas Fung.
Going into the final day of 12 singles matches, Europe will be needing to win three-and-a-half points to claim the EurAsia Cup, so it is fair to say that tomorrow is one not to be missed.
