fall golf - GolficityOur readers have been asking what happens after the FedEx Cup Playoffs finish.  Before anything else, the best U.S. and European players leave for the Ryder Cup, which is played over 3 days (Sept 28, 29, and 30th).  After that, get ready to lose a few golf balls in the leaf piles because it’s time for fall golf!

Between late September and early November, fall golf begins with the PGA Tour Fall Series offers four tournaments which is conducted to finalize the following year’s eligibility for players who do not finish in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup in that year. Players will fight for positions 31-125, which is based on final season earnings.

The PGA Tour Policy Board granted a full allocation of FedEx Cup points to the PGA Tour’s fall tournaments, beginning with the newly designed 2013-2014 schedule. As announced in March, the PGA TOUR season will begin in Oct. 2013 with the current Fall Series and conclude in late Sept. 2014 with the TOUR Championship.

The PGA Tour Fall Series began as a group of seven events which has since been toned down to four.  This series will determine who joins the 30 FedEx Cup finalists in receiving full-season exemptions to the following year’s tournaments. Included will be the golfers who did not qualify for the FedEx Cup finals, but did finish in the top 125 on the money list at the end of the Fall Series. Players who finished outside the top 125 can only enter the following year’s tournaments based on other exemptions or through qualifying.

The winner of each Fall Series event receives an exemption for the remainder of that season and the entirety of the following two seasons, and also receives an automatic invitation to the next year’s PGA Championship. On the flip side, no invitation is granted to the Masters Champion unless that player qualifies by other means.
