2017 Quicken Loans National FanDuel Fantasy Preview

The PGA TOUR has been producing some fantastic events over the past few weeks and the players look to yet again put on a show when they tee it up at TPC Potomac in Potomac, Maryland for the Quicken Loans National.

This is one of the younger events on the schedule, first debuting in 2007, and is hosted annually by Tiger Woods. In seven of the past 10 outings of his tournament, Congressional Country Club has played host, but they are now venturing to new venues every other year and the par-70, 7,139-yard course was chosen after recent renovations totaling nearly $20 million.

The field is not quite as packed as in recent weeks, but there will be some star power at the top with Official World Golf Rankings number nine golfer Rickie Fowler leading the way, while being followed closely by No. 12 Justin Thomas and No. 17 Patrick Reed. After that the field really tends to trend downwards, as Marc Leishman, Bill Haas, Kevin Chappell, Brendan Steele, David Lingmerth, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Danny Lee, J.B. Holmes, and Si-Woo Kim are all getting 33/1 odds or better to win. Also making the trip will be 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker and TOUR Championship winner Billy Horschel.

Of course Billy Hurley III will be back in the mix as he looks to become the first back-to-back winner after facing an interesting cast of characters towards the top of the leaderboard last season. Vijay Singh showed up with a blast from the past and came in as the runner-up while a look at the future of golf in Jon Rahm brought home a tie for third with Bill Haas.

The setting was a perfect one for Hurley III, though, who as a Naval Academy Graduate was able to earn his first PGA TOUR victory near the nation’s capitol after facing the tragedy of losing his father to suicide earlier in the year. He became the sixth American to win of the eight different champions since the tournament began 10 years ago and will attempt to join both Tiger Woods (2009, 2012) and Justin Rose (2010, 2014) as two-time victors.

On FanDuel, you need to ensure you are getting golfers who are making the cut and have a chance at jumping into the top-25. With your $60,000 salary, a player needs to roster a lineup with both high-end talent and sleepers who will be low owned and ensure that you come out on top each week.

The ability to string together scoring holes as well as bounce back from bogeys are a big plus and consistent play should be focused on in cash games. The players who really tend to have the ability to see their name towards the top of the leaderboard despite not being a household name or golfers who play well on specific courses are who you should focus on if you are getting into tournament play.

Below are a few names at all different price ranges who we believe will be helpful to your FanDuel roster selections in the coming week at the Quicken Loans National.

2017 Quicken Loans National FanDuel Picks

Whee Kim – $5,900 – At just 25 years of age, Kim has been making a nice splash on the PGA TOUR and currently sits 70th in the FedExCup standings thanks to some top finishes in the St. Jude Classic (2nd), Puerto Rico Open (5th), Safeway Open (13th), and Sanderson Farms Championship (14th). There was a stretch in the middle of the season in which he failed to make it to the weekend in six consecutive attempts, but Kim has righted the ship and is 3-for-4 recently while doing well at the U.S. Open before posting a 77 on Sunday. The key to his game is putting where he is gaining 0.380 strokes on the field (36th on TOUR) and his scrambling (63.12%, 24th on TOUR) should allow him to keep from putting up blowup holes. Kim will give you plenty of salary cap room to get Fowler into your lineup and has proven he can be a top competitor.

David Hearn – $6,300 – Hearn has shown up in a big way over his past few tournaments, first placing 10th in the St. Jude Classic and then eighth this past week in the Travelers Championship. He is more of a tournament play with a mere 12-of-22 cuts made (55%) over the course of the season, but his five top-25s and recent stretch bodes well against a weak field such as this one in Maryland.  Hearn is accurate off the tee (66.19%, 34th on TOUR) and is great out of the sand (57.58% sand save, 26th on TOUR) which should get him into the weekend and allow for another chance at a nice outing. Watch out for this 38-year-old out of Canada to be a nice asset for your lineup when all is said and done.

Graham DeLaet – $6,700 – DeLaet is the true definition of a tournament player and this year he has earned a spot in the top-10 five times over his 12 made cuts, but has failed to play all four days in a third of his starts. He is a well-rounded player who gains strokes both off the tee (0.533, 22nd on TOUR), with his approach (0.517, 26th on TOUR), and on the putting surface (0.471, 21st on TOUR). DeLaet has earned a birdie or better on 21.73% of his holes played (41st on TOUR) and has no issues on any type of hole, ranking in the top-45 in scoring average for par-threes, fours, and fives. At this price and against this field, DeLaet seems like a no-brainer in my book.

David Lingmerth – $7,200 – Lingmerth has been playing some fantastic golf of late and nearly pushed his top-25 streak to four at the Travelers Championship, falling just one spot lower at 26th. The Swedish-born golfer is an elite putter (0.519 strokes gained, 18th on TOUR) and has ranked in the top-50 of the FedExCup standings in each of the past two years. Thanks to a strong proximity to the hole (35’1”, 36th on TOUR) and his hot flat iron, Lingmerth will be able to easily get through this field and should be playing towards the top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

Si-Woo Kim – $7,300 – Kim should be under owned this week because of his overall stats showing a rough go of things over the 2017 campaign. After winning THE PLAYERS Championship, Kim dealt with injuries that forced him to miss the cut at the Colonial and withdraw from the Memorial Tournament. He rebounded very nicely at the U.S. Open, though, placing in 13th behind a score of six-under par. The 21-year-old is lightning in a bottle and could pay huge dividends on any given week, but there is of course the worry that he still may be dealing with some lingering issues as we have seen him withdraw from five tournaments in his 22 events played. If you are willing to take the risk on the youngster then you could get a huge week, but if you are playing in a cash game, both Kyle Stanley ($7,000) and Russell Henley ($7,300) fit the bill.

Kevin Chappell – $8,000 – Chappell is a player we have been all over this year, and with the weak field and his strong play all season, he remains at a price where we feel you need to get him onto your roster. The 30-year-old from UCLA has jumped to 26th in the world rankings and 25th in the FedExCup standings behind a victory in the Valero Texas Open and two other top-10 finishes; including coming in a tie for seventh at the Masters. He comes on the heels of four consecutive cuts made and is 14-for-18 (78%) on the season. Chappell does not lose much off the tee (299.9 yards per, 26th on TOUR) and has gained 0.815 strokes from tee-to-green (33rd on TOUR). We will keep getting Chappell into our lineup, especially against this field, as long as his price remains depressed.

Bill Haas – $8,400 – While they will not be playing on the same course here, making course history obsolete, it is still interesting to see Haas come into the event as a former champion (2013) who has dominated in each of the last pair of outings with a third in 2016 and fourth in 2015. He is fresh off an impressive fifth at the U.S. Open which extended his top-25 streak to three consecutive tournaments. Overall, he has 10 top-25 finishes on the season and has missed the cut a mere three times over his 16 starts (81%). He always gets the job done around the green (0.397 strokes gained, 15th on TOUR) thanks to 65.28% scrambling (7th on TOUR) and can is one of the best at getting the ball to the green in regulation (70.37%, 8th on TOUR). With his experience and skill we have no doubt he will be playing all four days here as he looks to nail down his seventh career PGA TOUR victory.

Rickie Fowler – $10,200 – Fowler really disappointed in his St. Jude start, missing just his third cut in 13 events this year, but turned it around at Erin Hills with a fifth-place finish in the second major. He has peppered the top of the leaderboard once again in 2017, earning nine top-25s with a victory at the Honda Classic, runner-up in the Memorial Tournament, and third-place in the Shell Houston Open. Expect to see Fowler have a chance at birdie at nearly every hole with his fantastic driving accuracy (67.53%, 19th on TOUR) and ability to hit greens (68.31%, 32nd on TOUR); leading to the best scoring average on TOUR this season (69.322). The 28-year-old averaged 4.45 birdies per round (4th on TOUR) with 25.13% of his holes played ending in a birdie or better (4th on TOUR). Fowler is simply the best in the field and there are enough players at low prices to make him a must play.
