Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2016 Wyndham Championship

The 2016 Wyndham Championship Fantasy Preview

With the Rio hangover beginning and the Playoffs just a week away, this week’s Wyndham Championship is the last stop for some last minute (and crucial) FedExCup points.  Only the top 125 players will continue their season and it’s possible to use this motivation when selecting some “on the bubble” sleeper picks this week.

Expect some big names to pick from this week as even the best in the field like Fowler and Reed will be looking to pad their playoff chances with a final event push.  All but just 11 of the players ranked 91st to 190th in FedExCup Points will be there, with a few of those “bubble” players we highlighted earlier being Bronson Burgoon (124th), Johnson Wagner (125th), and Matt Jones (126th).  This number will change hole by hole, but note: the guys around this number tend to dial it up, so be on the lookout for some great bargains.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Last week we covered The John Deere Classic as well as the Olympics.  First, let’s recap the Deere.

We’re bummed that we picked Ryan Moore a week too early (Travelers), but four of our Top Picks, including our horse pick, Jon Rahm (T11, 102 FP), finished within the Top 27.  Two of those players had all sub-70 rounds and posted more than 90 fantasy points.

We’re disappointed in the three missed cuts, including our two sleeper picks, so we’re hoping you mixed in some other sleepers, like Cauley (T8, 103.5 FP), who was our best performer from our Tuesday Sleeper Report.

The Olympics went off without a hitch and indeed it was fun to watch, especially on that final day with Kuch, Stenson, and Rose coming down the stretch.  As for our Olympics picks, we had three of the four finish in the Top 15, including our top pick Reed (T11) (although in hindsight we had the wrong American), who put up 75 fantasy points.  Grillo also finished with a solid T8 while Gomez came in T15.

The 2016 Wyndham Championship Field

Mr. 58 is back!  Furyk steps back into the spotlight this week to make another FedExCup title run.  As a past playoff champion and new record setter, you have to assume his game is in full gear right now.  He’ll be joined by recently-crowned PGA Champ Jimmy Walker, who looks to carry his major victory momentum into Bethpage next week.

Ryan Moore, last week’s winner, has been ramping up his game just in time, and could be a huge favorite on most rosters this week.

Don’t forget the big name players who come out for the season’s final event; this year we’ll see Olympians Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed, Rafa Cabrera Bello, and Danny Lee jump right back into PGA TOUR action fresh out of Rio.

It will be a packed house indeed, with 10 of the OWGR Top 30 playing in this week’s event—which should create some large ticket games on DraftKings.  Their top game is paying $50,000 to the winner this week for a $33 entry.  More about this event below.

This Week’s Course Preview

Sedgefield Country Club measures in at 7,127 yards and plays as a par 70.  This course opened its doors in 1925 and was one of two courses used for the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938.

We can tell from previous editions of this event that Sedgefield is best conquered by guys who can score well around the greens.  We’re not overly concerned with picking accurate and long hitters this week—although it helps, it’s not a critical key to success here.  We’ll talk more about stats and what key indicators we’ll be honing in on for this week’s event in our Fantasy Notes section below.

As for the course, Sedgefield usually ranks as one of the easiest Par 70’s on the schedule.  Last year there was a 61 and five 62’s throughout the week, and the scoring average for the event was 68.86.  Their are only two par 5’s on the course, and last year they ranked second easiest of the season.

Oddsmakers are probably gambling whether or not Furyk shoots 57 this week.

Weather Forecast for Greensboro, NC

Another rain-riddled event is in the forecast this week in NC.  Expect rain and thunderstorms Thursday and for most of the weekend.  Friday looks to be the best day, but definitely expect more delays and suspended rounds.

Last Year’s Results from the Wyndham Championship

Not many fantasy players ran with Davis Love III last year as the 51-year-old became the third-oldest winner in PGA TOUR history.  He closed out his tournament with an impressive 6-under-par 64 on the final day to beat out Jason Gore.  Fans will remember that Love began the day behind by four strokes, but then began turning up the dial around the greens, making multiple birdies and an eagle.

DL3 finished the week 3rd in Strokes Gained: Putting, T10 in Driving Accuracy, and T9 in Scrambling.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the Wyndham Championship

The past two winners at Wyndham (Davis Love III and Camilo Villegas) both had eerily similar stats en route to their victories at Sedgefield.  Both finished in the Top 10 in Driving Accuracy, Proximity to the Hole, and Scrambling.  They also both finished in the upper 30’s in Driving Distance.

Okay, so what does this all mean?  We’re going to put less emphasis on distance and focus on the key indicators that matter here.  Putting, Scrambling, and Accuracy will be our top three targets when running our algorithms this week.  It’s best to sort the our statistical indicators by GPFP this week, because you’ll notice a lot of low-priced players in the Top 20.

Don’t forget that we WILL overlook some stats if we feel the player is trending and has the ability to put up a ton of fantasy points due to historical play at this venue.
