Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Fantasy Preview

Perhaps, in some parallel universe, all golf tournaments run from Wednesday to Saturday, and in that same alternate reality Luke List is a putting machine.

The probability that we all temporarily entered some kind of Twilight Zone seemed highly plausible given that List, whose last three season’s ranks for SG: Putting are 185, 189 and 174, suddenly started draining everything he looked at on the greens.

His final round of 66 at Torrey Pines South propelled him up the leaderboard at the American Express on Saturday, and with the 54-hole leaders – Will Zalatoris, Jason Day and Aaron Rai – all toiling under the spotlight, List continued to gobble up birdies with his flat stick.

Zalatoris righted himself enough to force a playoff, but List – in his 206th PGA TOUR start – was not to be denied, and his birdie at the first extra hole was enough for him to clinch his maiden victory.

For the 37-year-old, it wasn’t an out-of-body experience that clinched the win or a trip to an alternate dimension that carried him to victory – instead, it was the hiring of a new putting coach, Stephen Sweeney, in December. A decision that has already paid for itself countless times over.

It’s a possibility that Zalatoris himself might be considering. The youngster possesses an extraordinary amount of talent, but he too really struggles on the greens. It may just click like it has for a contemporary, Collin Morikawa, but the hope is that this elite young talent doesn’t have to wait until he has turned 37 before he finds his touch with the flat stick.

Maybe he’ll prove us wrong at the AT&T Pebble Beach this week, which is the next stop-off on the TOUR’s West Coast swing.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

Oh so close. Our one-two punch was Rahm – Zalatoris, finishing second and T3 respectively. Needless to say, Luke List busted our bracket a bit but we’re happy with the 2-3 finish on our DK roster and that power helped us cash in on some rosters.

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Field

There’s just ten of the world’s top 50 players in the field this week, and you can thank Saudi Arabia for that – the likes of Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele are in the Middle East making their considerable bank balances even more considerable.

Back in California, it’s local favorite Patrick Cantlay that leads the way alongside defending champion Daniel Berger, with the returning-to-form Jason Day and Justin Rose – and the outstanding upstart Maverick McNealy – leading the best of the rest.

Jordan Spieth, another former Pebble Beach champion, is another to watch out for, while the European Tour supplies two monster drivers in Min Woo Lee and Dean Burmester for one week only.

There’ll be a trip down memory lane courtesy of Tom Lehmann and Davis Love III, and don’t forget the pro-am element – if you’ve wondered how long Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is off the tee or how Don Cheadle’s short game is holding up, now’s your chance to find out.

This Week’s Course Preview

In the midst of the pandemic, TOUR officials decided to pare back last year’s edition of the AT&T Pebble Beach and had it played at just two of the traditional host venues – Pebble Beach itself and the fiddly Spyglass Hill.

But it’s back to the traditional trio in 2022, with the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula back amongst the party.

Let’s start at Pebble Beach, the former US Open host that will provide the backdrop to two of the four rounds played. A short, coastal Links track, PB measures in at a shade over 7,000 yards for its Par 72, and features some extraordinary vistas across the Pacific Ocean.

Despite its status as a former major host, Pebble Beach plays slightly easier than you might expect, although there’s around 100 bunkers on the premises and the Poa Annua greens are tiny – bring you’re a-game on approach or you’re going to be chipping and scrambling….a lot.

Spyglass Hill plays half like an ocean-fronted Links and half as a fiddly, tree-lined parklands track with narrow fairways, and with the weather forecast seemingly benign this could be the one that causes the most headaches for the players. A sub-7,000 yard Par 72, there will nevertheless be plenty of clubbing down as the field tries to find these raised Poa greens in good order.

The lightest of relief is provided by Monterey Shore, a wide-open Par 71 that features large Poa Annua greens that even Carlton Banks and co should be able to find with regularity.

Weather Forecast for Monterey, CA

These are famous last words, given how quickly the conditions on sea-front courses can change, but right now the forecast for Monterey this week is pleasant to say the least.

Wall to wall sunshine appears to be in the offing, and while the temperatures are cool – around the 64˚F mark – the sun will at least keep the players somewhat warm while they are waiting for Larry the Cable Guy to find his ball in the rough.

And the wind….well, here’s some interesting news if it stands. The forecast suggests a lowly 6-8mph is in the offing, which even accounting for a likely ocean speed-up is still benign indeed for this part of the world.

With Pebble Beach taking on the majority of hosting duties in 2021, it always seemed likely that a class act would win an event that has previously been aced by such luminaries as Nick Taylor, Ted Potter and Vaughn Taylor.

A monumental eagle putt at the 72nd hole was the difference-maker for Daniel Berger, but in truth he had been outstanding in all departments and was a thoroughly deserving winner at -18.

It was his second eagle on a sublime Sunday, and Berger quickly overcame a below-par Saturday to clinch his second TOUR title since the pandemic restart – McNealy, with a closing stretch of -5 from nine holes, roared into second place with Jordan Spieth (who fluffed his lines with a closing 70) and Cantlay back in T3.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this Week

Given that DraftKings are already promoting their Genesis Invitational slate, it gives you a flavor of their intent for this week’s outing. That said, we can still forge ahead with some classy line-ups given that these contests have plenty of upside.

  • PGA $200k Drive the Green: This perhaps isn’t a week to overthink things, given the pro-am nature of the event and the weak field. So buy yourself a $5 ‘lottery ticket’ or two in this contest – the winner pockets $50k.
  • PGA $800k Pitch & Putt: There’s not a great deal of equity in producing multiple line-ups this week – the mid and low-card of players is stacked with risk and likely frustration, so again let’s lock it down with an entry or two in this $20 affair….the winner walks away with $200k, and there’s plenty of sizable consolation prizes to be won.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The AT&T Pebble Beach is an event where amateurs and celebrities get to step up to the plate – while trying not to p*** off the pros going about their day job.

In some ways, these aren’t perfect pro-am conditions – it’s pretty cold weather-wise, and Spyglass Hill can be a conundrum for even some of the best players in the world, so there could be long and tedious rounds from the amateurs to endure.

But it’s always nice to see Pebble Beach in all its splendor, while Monterey Shore – in the expected low winds – really is there for the taking.

We’re expecting plenty of birdies at these latter two courses, and with wide fairways it’s a case of bombs away and then soft, sky-scraping wedges to hold the greens nicely and make plenty of birdies from inside 125 yards.

More nuance is required at Spyglass Hill, a less-than-driver layout where strategy and ball-striking are to the fore, but all three require reliable Poa Annua greens – remember, these surfaces are made agreeable to assist the celebrities in the field.

We’ve already detailed the identities of some of the previous winners – a more eclectic bunch you couldn’t wish to see, so it’s a case of picking the best players available at each price point, hoping they get paired with an acceptable set of celebs and then also praying that they have the motivation to go and grab the W.
