Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for  The Truist Championship

2025 Truist Championship Fantasy Preview

When Scottie Scheffler opens up a golf tournament with rounds of 61 and 63, you can kiss goodbye to any notion of that event being a competitive exercise any longer.

The world number one raised out of the blocks at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson, opening up a mammoth lead… and at no point did he look like relinquishing it. Scheffler is an outstanding frontrunner that barely makes any mistakes.

Ironically, it was one error – a somewhat duffed chip – at the 71st hole that cost Scottie the lowest ever 72-hole score on the PGA TOUR in the modern era; instead, the -31 he compiled sits tied alongside Justin Thomas (2017 Sony Open) and Ludvig Aberg (2023 RSM Classic).

Scheffler made his PGA TOUR debut as a high school senior in the Byron Nelson, and this is something of a home game for a man that has made Texas his home state. And any doubts about his game – as ridiculous as those were – got put to bed with authority.

So, all in all, a meaningful week’s for the world number one, who has decided to sit out this week’s Signature Event as a result. Better known as the Wells Fargo Championship, a change in sponsorship means that the tournament will now be referred to as the Truist Championship.

But there’s another temporary change, too: Quail Hollow will be hosting the PGA Championship next week, and so a new course – the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania – will take on host duties for 2025.

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

The sure bet winner for us was last week was Scottie and boy did it pay off.  He was clearly the favorite going into the week, so that’s no magic spell. However, it’s the team you build around Scottie which helps you cash in.

With the win, Scottie marks our 3d successful winner picked this season.

The Truist Championship Field

The absence of Scheffler somewhat hurts this field, but otherwise the rest of the non-LIV members of the OWGR top-20 will be heading to Pennsylvania this week.

Rory McIlroy will lead the way – he is, technically, the defending champion having triumphed in the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

The likes of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Aberg, and Hideki Matsuyama will be looking to fine tune their respective games ahead of next week’s PGA Championship.

Justin Thomas will be looking to continue the form that took him to the RBC Heritage title, while his old chum Jordan Spieth will be looking to frank the round of 62 he fired at TPC Craig Ranch on Sunday.

Russell Henley, Viktor Hovland, Wyndham Clark, and Patrick Cantlay are just some of the players that round out this fine field.

This Week’s Course Preview

Welcome to the oldest country club in the United States. The Philadelphia Cricket Club has two properties in Pennsylvania, and it’s the setup in Flourtown – known as the Wissahickon Course – that will welcome the players this week.

The layout was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, who you may know was also the architect behind Bethpage Black, Baltusrol, and Winged Foot, to name just a few of his better-known works.

Each of those has earned their corn as a major host, with Bethpage Black also welcoming the Ryder Cup later this year, so Tillinghast is a man who was able to design futureproofed golf courses that test the all-round game of even the very best players.

Whether the Wissahickon Course lives up to that billing remains to be seen, although its selection as a former U.S. Amateur Four Ball host – a status typically reserved for some of the finest layouts on American soil – bodes well.

We think that the course will play to around 7,100 yards as a Par 70, with just two Par 5s and a couple of lengthy Par 4s… as well as a 240-yard Par 3.

There are some trees on the property, although plenty of holes look quite exposed to the elements, while some funky bunkering will really catch the eye and ensure the players focus on their work. Perhaps the key will be the small landing zones off the tee – to the naked eye, at least, there doesn’t look to be much in the way of short grass to work with.

Other than that, it’s something of a leap into the unknown this week…

Weather Forecast for Philadelphia, PA

The early forecast suggests that the players won’t enjoy the most edifying week in the fantastically named Flourtown.

There’s a chance that it could rain every day from Tuesday through to Saturday, with dark clouds looming even if the wet stuff doesn’t fall. Wind speeds in the region of 8-12mph won’t make temperatures of an average of 64 degrees feel any more pleasant.

And then, as if by magic, the early weather predictions suggest that all shall clear up in time for Sunday’s denouement, with sunshine and temperatures in the region of 73 degrees the order of the day.

Last Year’s Results from The Truist Championship

The 2024 Wells Fargo Championship – played at Quail Hollow, remember – was won by Rory McIlroy.

The Irishman bullied the field, reaching a final score of -17; that was five strokes clear of Xander Schauffele on -12. Nobody else reached double digits under par.

Much of McIlroy’s magic came at the weekend, when he carded the tied lowest round on Saturday (67) and the outright lowest (65) on Sunday to canter home.

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for this Week’s The Truist Championship

Are you a glass half-full kind of person, or glass half-empty?

That attitude may best determine your strategy this week. Remember, we’re off to a course that has never been seen on the PGA TOUR before, while the players will no doubt be all too aware that it’s the PGA Championship next week.

Unfamiliarity? Distractions? This week’s DFS events could be a land of opportunity if that’s how your minded, or a chance to batten down the hatches and play on a smaller budget.

Here’s contests to suit either mindset…

  • GOLF TOUR $30k Albatross: Because the Truist Championship is a small field event, we have to play a single-entry contest or two to prevent the whales from killing our action with multiple lineup variations. And this $12 game, with its top prize of $3k, is a handy starting point.
  • GOLF TOUR $250k MEGA mini-MAX: But in the spirit of this event feeling like a DFS lottery, given all the unknowns, why not throw your hat into the ring for the $25k top prize in this contest? Each entry will cost you just $3.

This Week’s Fantasy Notes for The Truist Championship

Unfortunately, we don’t have a great deal of information to work with this week.

We suspect that the Wissahickon Course will be a tight and challenging affair, with thin fairways and small-ish greens enhancing the tee-to-green challenge.

It’s unlikely that the layout will play devilishly hard, given that’s the last thing needed a week prior to a major, but even so it’s also doubtful that the Wissahickon Course will relent to a -31 winning score… or even -21, perhaps, but we’re guessing.

Interestingly, the venue hosted the Senior Players Championship in 2016, and Bernhard Langer’s winning score of +1 is the highest in the event’s history by a considerable margin – that shows that the Wissahickon Course can be set up in tough fashion, should the organizers desire it.

Otherwise, consider the limited knowledge we have of Tillinghast courses in high quality events: the 2019 PGA Championship, at Bethpage Black, and the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot perhaps offer some clues.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win The Truist Championship

Top Tier Pick # 1

Xander Schauffele (Odds: 16/1, FPPG: 75.3, Salary: $10,200)

Any lingering doubts about the return of Xander Schauffele have been well and truly kicked to the kerb by a fine triple-hander this spring.

He’s backed T12 at the Valspar Championship with T8 at The Masters and T18 at the RBC Heritage, so evidently Schauffele is ready to take his seat at golf’s top table once more.

A two-time major champion, Schauffele’s all-round strength ensures he has the class to win Signature Events, and even slight concerns about his driving since making his comeback can be assuaged by the knowledge that the fairways are so thin on the Wissahickon Course, most in the field will spend time in the long grass this week.

The next step in Schauffele’s rehabilitation? Winning, of course…

Key Stats:

  • SG: Approach – 5th
  • Greens in Regulation – 45th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 60th

Top Tier Pick #2

Patrick Cantlay (Odds: 20/1, FPPG: 83.6, Salary: $9,500)

As Justin Thomas proved at the RBC Heritage, quality thoroughbreds can get back into the winner’s circle – form is temporary, class is permanent and all that.

Patrick Cantlay can certainly be filed in that category, given that he’s already an eight-time winner on the PGA TOUR at the age of just 33.

It’s a long time between drinks for Cantlay, but his ball-striking form lately has seen him produce some of his best golf in years – now the flatstick needs to hold up its end of the bargain.

It’s not as if he’s a forlorn hope in that regard either, with strong putting displays carrying him to T5 at the Genesis Invitational and American Express this term.

T12 at the PLAYERS, where Cantlay bested the field average in all four main strokes gained departments, was his best of the season to date… and confirmed that with a sharper short game, he is a PGA TOUR winner in waiting once more.

Key Stats:

  • Greens in Regulation – 6th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 13th
  • Birdie or Better Percentage – 18th

Mid-Tier Pick #1

Daniel Berger (Odds: 40/1, FPPG: 76.4, Salary: $8,600)

There’s so much to like about Daniel Berger’s game right now, and it’s missing just one key ingredient: a shiny new trophy.

His T2 turn at the RSM Classic back in November was the turning point, and since then Berger has been on an extraordinary run of form, with T21 or better at The Masters and the PLAYERS Championship matched by three top-15 finishes in Signature Events.

The best of the lot, arguably, came last time out at the RBC Heritage, where Berger was a chilly putter away from challenging Justin Thomas and Andrew Novak at the top of the leaderboard.

But he’d gained strokes on the field putting in each of his seven prior outings, typically against world-class fields, and so we have no doubts about Berger’s ability to challenge for another Signature Event title this week.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 7th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 8th
  • Proximity to Hole – 23rd

Mid-Tier Pick #2

Si-Woo Kim (Odds: 66/1, FPPG: 66.7, Salary: $7,600)

The best work of Si-Woo Kim’s career has typically come at courses where finding fairways is at a premium; TPC Sawgrass, Sedgefield, and Waialae all succumbing to victories for the Korean.

We suspect that the Wissahickon Course may be somewhat in that vein, and Si-Woo is now playing well enough to make his accuracy count – his T8 at the RBC Heritage a real return to form in conditions that suited him nicely.

A PLAYERS Championship winner with a finish of T15 or better in all four majors, Si-Woo is a big game hunter… and he can prove it this week in Pennsylvania.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie Average – 8th
  • SG: Tee-to-Green – 19th
  • Driving Accuracy – 28th

Low-Tier Pick

Akshay Bhatia (Odds: 70/1, FPPG: 75.3, Salary: $7,100)

Although he hasn’t yet blossomed into a consistent sort, with three top-tens in his last seven strokeplay starts we can still say that Akshay Bhatia represents a bargain at $7,100.

Even in the non-top ten finishes, there were reasons for the left-hander to be cheerful: a cut made at The Masters is no mean feat for a 23-year-old still learning his craft, while at the RBC Heritage he gained a whopping +1.93 on approach against an elite field.

Bhatia’s seasonal highlight so far was a T3 turn at the PLAYERS Championship; TPC Sawgrass, with its small landing zones, offering some potential similarities to the Wissahickon Course.

Key Stats:

  • Birdie Average – 9th
  • SG: Putting – 13th
  • SG: Approach – 27th

Sleeper Pick for The Truist Championship

Harris English (Odds: 100/1, FPPG: 65.0, Salary: $6,900)

When the 2020 U.S. Open headed to the Tillinghast property Winged Foot, Harris English was near the summit of the leaderboard for most of the event, ultimately settling for a solo fourth finish.

Today, he has three top-ten finishes in the U.S. Open to his credit, which confirms that English likes conditions when they are at their toughest – he should, in theory, enjoy a decent challenge at another Tillinghast design this week.

And why shouldn’t he be bullish after a fine start to the year? English won the Farmers Insurance Open back in January, but arguably topped that – in terms of quality of performance – with T12 at The Masters, where he gained +1.49 on a world-class field on approach… his best iron and wedge numbers since 2023.

Key Stats:

  • SG: Putting – 27th
  • Scrambling – 54th
  • Bogey Avoidance – 58th

Alternative Sleeper Pick for The Truist Championship

Gary Woodland (Odds: 150/1, FPPG: 62.9, Salary: $6,300)

A T8 finish for Gary Woodland at Bethpage Black in 2019 was the third of four major top-ten finishes for a player who has often shaped at his best in tough, technical tests.

But he can hang in birdie fests too, as he proved with a T2 turn at the Houston Open in April, so there’s plenty to like about Woodland’s game right now.

Particularly as he appears to have scratched his putting itch, gaining strokes on high grade fields in two of his last three starts. For so long a quality operator in his ball striking, a sharper short game opens Woodland up to all manner of possibilities.

Key Stats:

  • Proximity to Hole – 29th
  • Scoring Average (adjusted) – 43rd
  • SG: Off-the-Tee – 55th
