Fantasy Golf Picks, Odds, and Predictions for the 2015 British Open (The Open Championship) from The Old Course at St. Andrews

The 2015 British Open Preview

With the Spieth victory at the John Deere, we have now successfully picked the winner in 10 out of 32 events this year.  Before we recap last week, lets set you up for golf’s next major, the British Open (The Open Championship).

With Rory McIlroy sidelined, the Spieth story will become even bigger this week, as everyone will continue talking about his shot at a season Grand Slam.  With his recent win Sunday at the John Deere Classic, you can bet that Jordan will be the clear favorite—and most expensive in any salary cap league.

What’s really interesting is the fact that Spieth has the ability to join Ben Hogan (1953) as the only two players to win the year’s first three majors.  Remember, Tiger won three majors in 2000 but not consecutively.

Speaking of Tiger, Woods had an impressive showing at the Greenbrier, which caught some attention from fans, talking heads, and even a few fantasy players. Tiger ended the tournament with a 67 on Sunday which was good enough for a T32 finish.  Overall the performance was nothing to write home about but his level of play was a dramatic improvement over his dismal showing at the U.S. Open.  This week Woods is returning to the site 2 of his 3 Open Championship wins, but can you really count on that stat to make Tiger a viable option this week?

Last Week’s Fantasy Results

After a disappointing week at the Greenbrier, we bounced back with a vengeance at the John Deere with Spieth (1st), Zach Johnson (T3), and our Sleeper Pick Danny Lee (T3) all finishing in the top three.

So far this season we picked 10 winners out of 32 events (with a 3 out of the last 4 win streak to boot!) with only 10 more tournaments left on the schedule.  The $1,521,156 week bumped our YTD fantasy earnings to just over $33 million.  Bring on the Open…

Last week we offered our premium members a few sample rosters for DraftKings and a bonus pick if they couldn’t fit Spieth on their roster.  Not surprisingly our bonus pick Jason Bohn finished T12 and put up some quality fantasy points.

Here’s the sample fantasy roster we offered last week if you we’re taking Spieth and if you followed our advice we’re sure you cashed in nicely:

Fantasy Roster Suggestion with Jordan Spieth

The Field

It goes without saying that we’ll see a full field for the season’s third major.  The streaking Jordan Spieth will headline this week’s event as Rory McIlroy (No. 1 in the world and defending champion) sits out due to an ankle injury he sustained while playing soccer with fiends.

Jordan is only the sixth player in history to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year and is coming into Scotland off the heels of yet another win in Illinois.  Joining him will be 78 of the remaining 80 in this week’s Official World Golf Rankings.

Tom Gillis who lost to Spieth at the John Deere Classic last weekend took a last minute spot in the British Open as a Top-5 finisher.

Tom Watson and Nick Faldo will play in their final Open Championships as well.  We’ll be leaving them off our rosters this week but it’s always nice to see these legends take to the tee box one more time.

Another hot player to watch this week will be Rickie Fowler who seems to be going after debunking his “most overrated” label with a vengeance.  Not only did Rickie win the THE PLAYERS earlier this season, he’s also coming into the British Open fresh off a win at the Scottish Open last week.

The Course

St. Andrews (Old Course) measures in at 7,297 yards and plays as a par 72.  Highly respected as the birthplace of golf, this legendary course was first introduced in the 1500s.

Riddled with high grass and plenty of deep bunkers, this windy track can prove to be a test even the world’s best players.  With 112 bunkers, you can imagine the scoring won’t be great especially if the wind picks up.

Despite his -16 romping the last time this event was played at St. Andrews, Louis Oosthuizen’s closest competitor finished at only -9.

Weather Forecast for Fife, Scotland

Temperatures shift to the 60s this week for the players although some of them are used to the climate change having played at the Scottish Open last week.

Overall, typical Scottish links weather is in store for the week, which includes some rain and wind in the forecast.

Friday and Saturday rounds are calling for winds as high as 22 mph and expect rain in the first two rounds.  This weather combination should keep scoring low for yet another challenging major championship test.

Last Year’s British Open Results

Needless to say, it was Rory’s year in 2014, as he became the third player in the history of the game to win three majors before age 26.

McIlroy successfully held off Sergio Garcia who charged his way up the leaderboard Sunday.  With a six shot lead heading into Sunday, Rory ended up falling to only two strokes ahead of Garcia after the 16th hole, but Rory buried a birdie on 16, which closed the door on Sergio and other Open hopeful Rickie Fowler who carded a 67 on the final day to finish T2 with Garcia.

Here’s just one of the holes that lead to Rory’s 2014 British Open victory:

Where to Play Fantasy Golf for the British Open this Week

As with this season’s previous two majors there is certainly one place every fantasy golf fan should be playing this week and that’s the $3 million payout “Millionaire Maker” event on DraftKings.  Here are the details:

  • DraftKings PGA $3M MILLIONAIRE MAKER: There are plenty of places to play fantasy golf this week, but only one should not be missed.  For the third time this season, DraftKings is hosting a $20 entry event for a major and offering a cool $1 million to first place.  With over 100k available entries it certainly seems like a long shot, but with payouts down to 37,500th place you actually have a much better chance here then buying a $20 scratch off ticket.  We’ll help make sure you’re one of those top place finishers with our detailed picks below.

Bonus Tip: If you refer a friend and they sign up to DraftKings, you get a free $20 entry to the big game for every friend that joins. Visit DraftKings for details.  You’ll be amazed how many of your buddies will sign up for a chance like this.

This Week’s British Open Fantasy Notes

Don’t be fooled when you see big names like Kuchar at only $8,000, Furyk at $7,700, and Zach Johnson at $7,400.  In any normal weekly tournament these guys would be sitting with a $9k or $10k price tag, but the majors can be deceiving.  Yes, you can score a lineup that looks like all studs, but are they the best for this windy links course on such a huge stage?  The fact is that plenty of guys who have already won on TOUR this year are sitting with low $7K price tags.

Clear favorites this week should jump right off the page but everyone you know will have them on their roster so it’s the sleeper picks that will help you win the DraftKings $1 million dollar first prize.  So this week we’ll provide you with our five best picks to win including two sleeper picks.  Plus be sure to look our for our Tuesday Sleeper Report for more sleepers coming off 50/1 or higher odds.

Did we mentioned we’re 2-for-2 in major winner picked this season?  Let’s see if we can stretch that out to 3-for-3!
