Fantasy Golf Predictions - 2013 OHL Classic

Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2013 OHL Classic Nov. 14th – 17th, 2013

Tournament Preview

We’ve come to the final stop of the new season’s fall start – with some top names banking some quality FedExCup points before heading into the holiday break. Jimmy Walker, Ryan Moore, and Webb Simpson have all jumped up top early in the season and are now sitting pretty alongside Dustin Johnson. Charles Howell III, who typically comes out of the gate firing on all cylinders, also posted two top-7 finishes in his first three events.  This week we’ll see how the field fairs on a tough El Camaleón, with the TOUR moving to the warm sun of Mexico for the final pit stop before Hawaii in January.

The Course

El Camaleón GC measures 6,923 yards and plays as a par 71. Created by the Shark, Greg Norman, in 2004 “The Chameleon” cuts through multiple tricky landscapes which include tropical jungle, caves, and sandy oceanfront. The design even includes a cavern on the inlet of the first fairway, which comes into the view of players as they head off the first tee.

Hitting the TOUR in 2007, the PGA spent six years here as home to the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship before the venue received its own fall date this year. El Camaleón will also serve as one of two hosts for the World Amateur Team Championships in 2016.

Rain is expected throughout the week which will certainly affect the normal conditions of the tricky track.

  • Round 2: Friday (Nov 15) 83 degrees, 50% chance of rain, scattered T-Storms.
  • Round 3: Saturday (Nov 16) 84 degrees, 30% chance of rain, scattered T-Storms.
  • Round 4: Sunday (Nov 17) 84 degrees, 30% chance of rain, isolated T-Storms.

2012 Results

It was almost all over until Robert Allenby double-bogeyed the final hole of regulation which allowed then rookie John Huh to fight for an additional eight extra playoff holes.  With a par on the par-3 No. 10, Huh chipped to within 3 feet of the hole from the rough which allowed him to bury the putt for the win.  Conversely, Allenby’s chip from the sand was left about 15 feet from the hole for par, which he could not successfully convert.  It was the longest PGA TOUR playoff since the 1983 Phoenix Open, which was also eight holes.

This was Huh’s first PGA TOUR win in just his 5th PGA TOUR start.   Allenby took a two-shot lead to No. 18, but decided to go with Driver off the tee and pushed the ball into the trees.  We’re sure he’ll be hitting something else next time he has a 2-stroke lead on the 72nd hole.

Notes

This may well be your fantasy league’s last tournament before everyone comes back to play in January.  The Hyundai Tournament of Champions will be the next FedExCup tournament at Kapalua on January 3, 2014 where Dustin Johnson will be in contention to defend his title and take a commanding lead atop the FedExCup leaderboard. Look out for a full schedule of great golf kicking off on January 3rd, but in the meantime…good luck with the OHL and check out our picks below from our Fantasy Golf Gurus:

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the 2013 OHL Classic

  • Charles Howell III (Golficity Odds 10/1): Howell closed with a 71 to finish T27 at Seaside last week but overall looks to be playing well in the early part of the year.  CH-3 has three top 20s among with four cuts made in four starts in Mexico.
  • Brian Gay (Golficity Odds 14/1):  Gay won here in 2008 and is second in all-time earnings at El Camaleón. He notched a T20 in 2009 and a T5 in 2011 on this track and comes into Mexico with a T4 at Seaside last week.
  • Ryan Moore (Golficity Odds 18/1): This is Moore’s first appearance at El Camaleón but we like the way he’s been playing so far this year.  The neck-tie wearing Moore leads the TOUR in earnings and total driving while ranking T17 in GIR and putting inside 10 feet.
  • Tim Clark (Golficity Odds 24/1): This year marks Clark’s OHL Classic tourney debut, but we can’t overlook the T2 he put up last week at The McGladrey Classic with a nine-birdie 62 on the scorecard.  He now has ten straight seasons with a runner-up finish – but we feel he can take the No. 1 spot this week at El Camaleón.
  • Robert Garrigus (Golficity Odds 28/1): Robert has top 25s in each of his three starts this season which is nothing to go crazy over, but nothing to ignore either.  Watch out though, because in this field, he can shine.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win the 2013 OHL Classic

  • Daniel Summerhays (Golficity Odds 50/1):  Summerhays shared the 36-hole lead and held the outright lead after 54 holes on this track last year but ended up tied for fifth.  Daniel finished T10 at The McGladrey Classic last week and we’re calling his name for a long-shot this week.
  • Briny Baird (Golficity Odds 50/1):  Baird played well at Seaside and knows El Camaleón very well where he’s 6-for-6 with three top 10s and another pair of top 15s. A sleeper pick for sure, but a wise one at that.
