Fantasy Golf Predictions - 2013 Wyndham Championship

Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2013 Wyndham Championship Aug 15 – 18, 2013

Preview:  With all the majors behind us, the focus has shifted to the FedExCup playoffs.  The field will be duke it out one final time with the last 500 FedExCup points on the line before next week’s tip off at Liberty National. Players like Zach Johnson, Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas, and Webb Simpson will all be in attendance to try and dominate Sedgefield Country Club.

The Course: Sedgefield Country Club measures 7,130 yards and plays as a par 70. The course is filled with small, undulating greens which will pose a big threat to even the field’s best short game players. Sedgefield opened in 1925 and was one of two courses used for the inaugural Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. The track plays home to the 1965 edition which was the site of Sam Snead’s record 82 TOUR victories (which should soon be passed by Tiger Woods).

The Weather at 2013 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC (from weather.com)

  • Round 1: Thursday (Aug 15) 77 degrees, 30% chance of rain, few showers.
  • Round 2: Friday (Aug 16) 77 degrees, 30% chance of rain, few showers.
  • Round 3: Saturday (Aug 17) 71 degrees, 40% chance of rain, showers.
  • Round 4: Sunday (Aug 18) 71 degrees, 40% chance of rain, showers.

2012 Results: Last year Sergio Garcia ended a four-year winless drought on U.S. soil with his victory here.  Garcia had to wait an extra day to win a Monday finish by two strokes over Tim Clark – another pick of ours this week.   Garcia went 66-66 in his final two days which included dodging Sunday storms that halted play. Garcia pulled away with three consecutive birdies starting at No.15 after play resumed on Monday and was able to notch his eighth PGA TOUR victory. It was Sergio’s first win back in the U.S since winning THE PLAYERS in 2008. It was also a redemption of sorts for the 2009 Wyndham; when Garcia gave up a three-shot lead over the final nine.

Notes: As we all know, the playoffs are next week and some guys are still trying to punch a ticket. Notable players who are hanging around the “cut line” include European Ryder Cup standouts Martin Kaymer (119th) and Nicolas Colsaerts (126th), Padraig Harrington (128th), Woody Austin (134th) and Vijay Singh (141st). In the past three years, no one has managed to snatch a playoff berth from outside 140th in the standings entering the Wyndham.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win the 2013 Wyndham Championship

  • Brandt Snedeker (Golficity Odds 10/1): Snedeker was the winner at the RBC Canadian Open a few weeks ago and looks to be in great shape for a playoff run. He’s 4-for-5 at Sedgefield with a T5 in 2009 and a T8 in 2010. Brandt currently ranks 10th in strokes gained-putting and ninth in adjusted scoring on that track.
  • Bill Haas (Golficity Odds 18/1): Haas has already posted one win this year with a career-best T7 at Firestone, and a T25 at Oak Hill. He’s heating up and continues to lead the TOUR with nine top 10s.  Definitely a strong pick this week no matter how you slice it.
  • Zach Johnson (Golficity Odds 22/1): This is Zach’s first appearance since a share of 26th place here in 2008. He tied for 8th last week at the PGA Championship which was his fourth consecutive top 10, giving him a total of five on the season.
  • Webb Simpson (Golficity Odds 30/1): Webb won this event in 2011 and finished T8 here in 2010 and T22 last year.  He finished T25 at Oak Hill last week where he carded a second-round 64 but failed to convert that momentum into his third and fourth rounds. Simpson currently ranks 16th in adjusted scoring.
  • Sergio Garcia (Golficity Odds 38/1):  The defending champ is back in full force to grab some FedEx points before the Barclays.  Garcia placed fourth in his only other appearance at Sedgefield in 2009 and leads the PGA TOUR in strokes gained-putting.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Tim Clark (Golficity Odds 40/1): Historically speaking Clark is a monster on this course. He tied for sixth at Sedgefield in 2008 and was runner-up last year. Clark also came in under par in all eight rounds, averaging 66.125. He currently leads the PGA TOUR in both fairways hit and proximity to the hole from the rough at this course.
  • David Toms (Golficity Odds 45/1): Toms is a sleeper pick for sure – don’t bet the ranch on this one. He finished T16 in Reno and posted a season-best solo seventh at the PGA Championship where he was under par in each of the last three rounds. Four cuts made in five starts at Sedgefield.

Last Week’s Fantasy Golf Predictions Results (2013 PGA Championship)

  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds 5/1): T40
  • Phil Mickelson (Golficity Odds 12/1):T72
  • Adam Scott (Golficity Odds 18/1):  T5
  • Hunter Mahan (Golficity Odds 30/1):  T57
  • Bill Haas (Golficity Odds 32/1):  T25

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Keegan Bradley (Golficity Odds 38/1):   T19
  • Henrik Stenson (Golficity Odds 45/1): 3
