Fantasy Golf Predictions 2013 The Honda Classic

Fantasy Golf Predictions for the 2013 Honda Classic February 28th – March 3rd

The Course:  PGA National (Champion Course) measures at 7,110 yards and plays as a par 70.  This track was designed by George and Tom Fazio in 1981 specifically to host major events.  The course layout was the venue for the 1983 Ryder Cup.  The track also staged the 1987 PGA Championship and 18 Senior PGA Championships before the Honda Classic arrived in 2007.  Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course 23 years go by introducing the nasty “Bear Trap” on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 which consistently proves to be a challenge for even the best.  All three of these greens nestle as water based peninsulas which forces accuracy.

The Weather in Palm Beach, FL (from Weather.com):

  • Round 1: Thursday (Feb 28) 77 degrees, 30% chance of rain, scattered showers.
  • Round 2: Friday (Mar  1) 70 degrees, 0% chance of rain, mostly cloudy.
  • Round 3: Saturday (Mar  2) 66 degrees, 20% chance of rain, partly cloudy.
  • Round 4: Sunday  (Mar  3) 66 degrees, 0% chance of rain, sunny.

2012 Results:  It was this tournament last year that sent Rory McIlroy to the top of the World Rankings with his two shot victory over Tiger Woods. Tiger played a heck of a final round finishing with a 62. This is sort of a debut for McIlroy as he recently moved to Jupiter, FL after buying a nice size home on the water.  With a birdie-eagle finish, Woods found himself within one of the young Irishman, but McIlroy answered with a birdie at No. 13 and parred his last five holes to fend off Tiger.

Notes:  World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 2 Tiger Woods both were knocked out in the first round of last week’s match play tournament in the snowy Arizona dessert.  Rory will be defending his crown against another star-studded field of top notch contenders. The field includes world ranked No. 5 Louis Oosthuizen, No. 6 Justin Rose and No. 8 Lee Westwood.  No. 18 ranked Dustin Johnson, who lives in nearby Jupiter, was a late addition after his first-round exit from the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.  Ever since Johnson won the season opener at Kapalua, he’s been missing some cuts, and hasn’t looked comfortable.  FedExCup leader Brandt Snedeker missed the match play tournament and will sit this event out as well.

Top 5 Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Graeme McDowell (Golficity Odds 12/1):  Graeme played great in Arizona last week after a heartbreaking loss in the quarterfinals.  He has a T6 here in 2011 after putting up a 64 in his final round.  He also put up a 64 here last year and finished T9.
  • Charl Schwartzel (Golficity Odds 15/1):  Charl Schwartzel is still one of the hottest golfers on the PGA TOUR.  Other than his first round knockout at Dove Mountain last week, he hasn’t finished worse than 5th in his last 7 starts.  Schwartzel finished T5 last year at this event.
  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds 20/1):  Although he didn’t look comfortable last week, his level of play wasn’t all that bad.  In match play, the guy who plays just a little bit better takes the win.  Last year he closed his final round with a 62 to share runner-up honors in what was his debut at PGA National.  He’s got a win this year at Torrey Pines at the Farmers Insurance Open and is on the top of the charts on TOUR in adjusted scoring.
  • Louis Oosthuizen (Golficity Odds 20/1):  One of the most consistent golfers on TOUR, Oosthuizen was also certainly one of the strongest performers to conclude 2012 and he even kicked off this year with a victory.  Illness forced him to withdraw from the last two The Honda Classics, but he survived both cuts before pulling out.
  • Justin Rose (Golficity Odds 25/1):  Rose hasn’t finished outside of T24 in his last 10 starts worldwide.  He has 2 top 5’s in his last 2 visits at PGA National, including a T5 in 2012.  Great all around player on courses with these types of designs.  Coming off a first round loss in Arizona, but we don’t think that will phase him on this track.

Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Russell Henley (Golficity Odds 50/1):  Rookies are 24-for-50 with no top 10s since 2010 at PGA National.  But we feel this rookie is different.  Henley is the first rookie winner on tour this year with a victory at Waialae a month ago.  Russell played well at Dove Mountain but didn’t make it as far as he would have liked.
  • Nicholas Colsaerts (Golficity Odds 50/1):  This recent European Ryder Cup player has been showing some good signs of life in his golf game. Colsaerts performed pretty well last week before getting knocked out in the semifinals by the winner, Matt Kuchar.

Last Week’s Fantasy Golf Predictions Results (WGC – Accenture Match Play Championship):

  • Charl Schwarztel (Golficity Odds: 8/1): 1st Round Loss
  • Louis Oosthuizen (Golficity Odds: 12/1): 2nd Round Loss
  • Tiger Woods (Golficity Odds: 15/1): 1st Round Loss
  • Luke Donald (Golficity Odds: 18/1): 2nd Round Loss
  • Hunter Mahan (Golficity Odds: 23/1):  Runner-Up (2nd Place)

Last Week’s Fantasy Golf Sleeper Picks/Odds to Win:

  • Fredrik Jacobson (Golficity Odds: 50/1): 3rd Round Loss
  • Padraig Harrington (Golficity Odds: 62/1): 1st Round Loss
