The Sleeper Report: Fantasy Golf Sleepers, Long Shots, and Undervalued Picks for the 2015 BMW Championship
BMW Championship 2015 Fantasy Sleeper Preview
The field is trimmed down to just 70 this week for the 2015 BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club located outside of Chicago, IL as the players look to make a final push towards the TOUR Championship next week.
In the past, this event has hosted the top names in the game, and as a result has a very impressive list of victors dating back to its debut in 2007 when Tiger Woods was the two-stroke victor after posting a score of 22-under-par. He won once again in 2009 and was followed by a list of who’s-who in golf as Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson, and 2014 FedEx Cup Champion Billy Horschel rounded off the list of winners here.
In the 2014 installment of this event, Horschel fended off a handful of big American names in Watson, Hoffman, Furyk, Fowler, and Palmer as he was able to remain consistent down the stretch and put himself in second in the standings. He eventually went on to win the TOUR Championship and cashed the big check to finish off the season.
Coming back into the mix this week will be Sergio Garcia, who after sitting out of the last two events in the FedExCup playoffs needs to do some work in order to get into the top-30 as he currently sits in 54th place. He will be chasing down two of the hottest golfers in the world right now in top-ranked Jason Day, who has won two of the past three events, including the PGA Championship, and the second-ranked player in the world, Jordan Spieth.
The playoffs thus far has not been too much of a surprise, as Day was able to win the Barclays, moving into first in the standings, followed by an impressive victory from Rickie Fowler at the Deutsche Bank Championship which vaulted him into contention; 1,182 points behind the leader Jason Day. One big development to watch is the emergence of youngsters that are tearing through the sport right now as four rookies (Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, and Zac Blair) remain in the hunt, although none of them currently reside within the top-30 with Thomas being the highest at 35th.
Not many golfers have been able to make the jump from outside of the bubble to the TOUR Championship in recent years with just two players moving into the mix after looking from the outside in going into this event. This year, Louis Oosthuizen is the man holding on for dear life to the final spot, but plenty of solid names remain close to him, including last year’s runner-up Chris Kirk and Hunter Mahan; owner of a perfect 35 playoff appearances to date.
The big guys to watch are dotting the top of the playoff leaderboard going into this week and there will surely be a few of them vying for a victory, but there is also the opportunity for a few to make their mark among the best the PGA has to offer with a big showing here. That said, let’s take a look at a few of the top sleeper selections heading into the BMW Championship.

2015 BMW Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
Mix and match these players with your usual rosters (or play them separately) to get the most out of your picks this week.
Robert Streb – Vegas Odds 60/1: Streb is one of the lesser known names in the top-15 going into this event, but he has put together one of the more consistent and impressive seasons thus far. His improvement has been swift since his rookie campaign in 2013 when he finished 126th in the standings, moving up to 71st in 2014 while currently residing in 12th after making 23-of-28 (82%) cuts during the regular season. He also earned his first victory at the McGladrey Classic and nearly took a second one down after a playoff loss in the Greenbrier Classic. Entering the playoffs, Streb had rattled off five consecutive top-18 finishes, including a top-10 in both the Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship, but has not seen a ton of success recently with a tie for 39th in both of the first two stops in this year’s playoffs. He should be able to rebound here given his solid driver (298.3 yards per, 38th on TOUR) combined with great putting (0.372 strokes-gained putting, 25th on TOUR) both of which can help Streb get back to the top of the leaderboard.
Danny Lee – Vegas Odds 70/1: Lee has had one of the more inconsistent and interesting seasons on the PGA TOUR as he’s competed in a ton of events (34) and has failed to get to the weekend 11 times (68%). Despite all the missed cuts, he has had plenty of impressive outings as well, winning the Greenbrier Classic in July and rattling off another six top-10s; including two third-place finishes. He has also turned it on as of late and has made the cut in eight of his last nine starts, but has failed to do better than 30th over the first two weeks of these playoffs. The key to his performance is his short game as he ranks 23rd in strokes-gained putting (.409), 10th in sand save percentage (61.15%) and 61st in scrambling (60.52%). Lee should be able to rebound from a Sunday 77 at the Deutsche Bank Championship and perform more like he did over the first three days when he was eight-under-par.
Kevin Chappell – Vegas Odds 100/1: Chappell has been a fairly consistent performer over the past few years, ranking in the top-60 of the FedExCup standings each season while putting up a career-high 10 top-25s in 2015. That being said, he only finished in the top-10 twice and has not done so since July when he tied for eighth at the John Deere Classic. Things are looking up though, as the 29-year-old has two of his top-25s in this year’s playoffs and was a force over the first two days in the last event before posting a score of two-over-par on the weekend. He isn’t a world-beater in any one part of his game, but is better than average with both his putter (.154 strokes-gained putting, 69th on TOUR) and with his big stick (30th in total driving) as he attempts to move up from his 57th spot with a big showing in this tourney.
Chris Kirk – Vegas Odds 110/1: Kirk is being widely overlooked in this event as he entered here last year leading the FedExCup standings, eventually losing out to a scorching hot Horschel who was first or second in the final three events. Kirk finished as the runner-up after a solid showing (T4) in the TOUR Championship, but has some work to do to get there this season as he ranks 37th in the standings. Chris played a mere 20 events in 2015, but he made it to the weekend 16 times (80%) and was able to grab his fourth career PGA TOUR victory at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Kirk is currently ranked 25th in the Official World Golf Rankings for a reason, and he seems to do well down the stretch, so it may be wise to take advantage of these long shot odds this week.
Rory Sabbatini – Vegas Odds 125/1: Another player needing a big performance to move on is South African Rory Sabbatini who has been all over the place in 2015 with just 14 made cuts in 24 events this year (58%). Despite his inconsistent play, the 39-year-old has been able to get into the top-10 four times and is peaking at the perfect moment with consecutive top-25s in this year’s playoff events. Last week, a Friday 74 kept him from really moving up the rankings, but he was able to shoot eight under over the other three days thanks to hitting 65.28% of GIR and putting .451 strokes better than the field. Sabbatini knows how to get victories as evidenced by his six career wins on the PGA TOUR and this would be a good week for him to secure another as he currently sits in 56th in the standings.
