The Bermuda Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

We can almost smell The Masters on the horizon, and maybe it’s no coincidence that a trio of young men with ambitions of slipping into the green jacket at Augusta are finding their form at the most opportune time.

You just know that Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas will have been disappointed not to win the ZOZO Championship last week, but once the frustration of that has worn off they will consider themselves in great touch ahead of the Georgia shootout.

But it was Patrick Cantlay, powered by an outstanding round of -7 on Sunday, who claimed the win on his home turf of California – his third PGA TOUR title, and confirmation once more that the young gun will be a perennial contender whenever the Tour heads to the west coast.

This week, it’s a completely different ball game as the action heads to the Atlantic for the Bermuda Championship, an event inaugurated in 2019 as the alternate to the WGC HSBC Championship.

Unsurprisingly, those confirmed in the field at Augusta have decided not to take the risk of travelling abroad so close to the Masters, and so the field this week resembles a local club pro-am rather than the cream of the crop of the PGA TOUR.

Will Zalatoris, Henrik Stenson and Brendon Todd take headline honors, and the overwhelming feeling is that this tournament provides ample opportunity for a sleeper pick to come through and lift the trophy – more on that shortly.

Royal Port GC is a picturesque layout that the best in the game would love trying to take apart, with nine holes playing along the coast and the other nine on a more traditional parklands track.

It’s easy, that’s the bottom line here, with generous fairways and huge Bermuda greens, and really the only major defense is the wind.

And….well, literally and metaphorically hold on to your hats as a fearsome gale looks set to blow in Southampton this week – from Friday onwards, we’re talking a 17-22mph breeze. That’s not an inconvenience; that changes how the players go about their business.

Comfort in the wind is obviously a major consideration for our sleeper shortlist this week for an event that has a wide-open feel to it. But who will get the job done? Here’s five players to watch at the 2020 Bermuda Championship.

The Bermuda Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Aaron Wise – 55/1 – When Aaron Wise won the AT&T Byron Nelson in 2018, most expected the big hitting youngster to break out. But it hasn’t worked out that way, and last season he missed 12 cuts in 18 starts.

But one appearance where he did make the weekend was at the Bermuda Championship last season, and that turned out to be his best effort in some time as he cashed in solo third.

Good memories should come flooding back then for a player who seems to have found something of late. T17 at the Sanderson Farms, Wise also ranks 25th for Greens in Regulation so far this term – an impressive sight for a guy notorious for spraying it around last season.

Padraig Harrington – 60/1 – It may have gone under the radar for many DFS enthusiasts, but Padraig Harrington has found a bit of form of late over in Europe.

T9 in the Scottish Open was followed by T14 at the Scottish Championship – both were played in the kind of coastal, blustery conditions in which the Irishman thrives.

The former British Open champion won on both PGA and European Tours in 2015 and 2016, so victory isn’t that far in his rear view mirror, and at a layout he should enjoy why not bank on Harrington to roll back the years this week.

Russell Knox – 66/1 – Russell Knox has won on three different occasions in company much classier than this, and whenever the word ‘wind’ is mentioned the Scot does spring to mind.

An Irish Open champion, everything Knox does screams breeze – raised in Scotland, he now resides in Florida.

His form is hit and miss but he was T9 at the Safeway Open, and his iron game remains reliably solid. Plus, unlike many in this field, we know he can take care of business when contesting for the trophy!

Scott Piercy – 70/1 – We’re into leap of faith time here, but – all things considered – Scott Piercy is better than a 70/1 chance in this company.

Last season was one of great frustration for Piercy, who made a very respectable 14/19 cuts but who could only convert four of those to top-25s.

But he played some excellent golf amongst his T29 at the Northern Trust, opening with a round of 65, and the good times returned in his T19 in the birdie fest at Shriners.

Comfortable in the wind and on the coast, it’s no exaggeration to call Piercy one of the classier iron players around, and if he brings his best to Bermuda then he can shine very bright.

Scott Stallings – 75/1 – This Bermuda Championship field is packed with talented individuals who arguably haven’t made as much of their career as they should, and you would have to file Scott Stallings in that category.

Take last season as a case in point. He made the cut in 15/20 events played, but only banked three top-25s – that suggests he’s very good, but not elite.

Well, very good might just get the job done in this field, and it wasn’t long ago that Stallings was T6 in the Sanderson Farms Championship.

An excellent ball striker, could Stallings join the pantheon of ‘vintage’ PGA TOUR winners that seems to have been the theme of late?
