Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2020 TOUR Championship
The TOUR Championship 2020 Fantasy Sleeper Report
So here we are: after months of incredible action, we’re down to the final 30 players to contest the finale of the FedExCup playoffs – the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
The final standings could not be more finely poised, with Dustin Johnson starting the week at -10 with the likes of Jon Rahm (-8), Justin Thomas (-7) and Webb Simpson (-6) breathing down his neck. There is everything to play for as we cap the 2019-20 season in style.
Rahm has managed to navigate his way to an advantageous position after winning the BMW Championship last week. It was a fascinating event played at a really tough host course at Olympia Fields, and the lead flip-flopped all the way through to Sunday, where easier conditions allowed the Spaniard and Johnson to power clear of the field.
DJ needed to drain a huge 44-footer at the last to force hie way into the playoff, and so you can only imagine that he had to laugh when Rahm nailed a 60-footer on the first extra hole to clinch his fifth PGA TOUR title.
Johnson goes into the TOUR Championship as a red-hot favorite, but he has never quite managed to get the job done at East Lake, and despite the course suiting his exceptional ball-striking capabilities you do wonder if that will have an impact come the close on Sunday.
The job in hand at East Lake is to hit the ball long and straight, and there aren’t many that do that as consistently well as DJ on the Tour. The tree-lined fairways will catch out any errant tee shots, while the rough is long enough that it is necessary to avoid it.
The Bermuda greens will run sharply too, with some super-slick run-off areas meaning that approaches not hit to the inch could say goodbye to the dancefloor. Then it becomes a real mission to get up and down for par.
That’s worth mentioning because there are only two Par 5 holes on this Par 70 real estate, and to make up the 7,319 yardage there are plenty of long old Par 4s – a number of them measure 450+ yards, and so there will be lots of lengthy approaches into these tough greens to hold, hence why the winning score here has averaged around -12 in recent times.
The nature of the TOUR Championship pre-leaderboard means that it’s going to be very difficult to get a sleeper winner over the line, however if your sportsbook is offering standard strokeplay odds – i.e. where every player starts on level par, then here are some sleepers to consider at hug prices this week.
