The 2021 RBC Heritage Fantasy Sleeper Report

There are some wins that transcend the sport of golf.

It was the break of dawn in Japan as Hideki Matsuyama was closing in on a Masters victory at Augusta, but make no mistake his countrymen and women would have been glued t their screens as their hero ended a long wait for a win in the most spectacular fashion.

Matsuyama is a ball striker of the highest order, but his unreliable putting stroke – and habit of making basic errors – left many wondering if he would ever truly fulfil his potential.

Well, if he never wins on the PGA TOUR again, Matsuyama will always be a Masters champion – and nobody can take that away from him.

In fairness to the Japanese ace, he cantered to the green jacket in fine style – at one point opening up a five-shot advantage on the field as Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris attempted to reel him in.

A few nerves towards the end saw a handful of bogeys made, but the damage had been done and Matsuyama claimed victory by a single stroke – becoming the first male player from Asia to win a major in the process.

He will enjoy a well-earned week off now, but there’s no rest for the wicked and the PGA TOUR rattles on with the RBC Heritage at the Harbour Town Links on Hilton Head island in South Carolina.

Quite why some have made the trip for a low-key event remains to be seen, and even accounting for Bryson DeChambeau’s withdrawal there’s still a quality field that includes defending champion Webb Simpson, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay amongst others.

Typically, this is a tournament that struggles to attract a decent field given its unfortunate scheduling, and that’s perhaps why prior to Simpson’s victory we had winners here at sportsbook odds of 66/1 (Wesley Bryan), 160/1 (C.T. Pan) and a whopping 200/1 (Satoshi Kodaira). Wouldn’t it be nice to replicate that this week!

To do so, the field will have to tame a layout designed by that madcap genius himself, Pete Dye. While the conditions play a huge part in the make-up of the event – a fierce wind can blow in off the Atlantic, this is a layout that has plenty of classic Dye defenses of its own including tiny, saucer-like greens and plenty of trees to cut off bombers trying to cut corners off the tee.

The result is a less-than-driver style grind where strategy and accuracy are key, and so it will be fascinating to see which players – just days after the Augusta trip – will be up for the challenge of grinding out a winning score.

The weather forecast isn’t too bad in truth, to be honest, but Dye courses play hard and fair so whoever slips into the tartan jacket this week will have earned the honor.

Hopefully for the sake of this sleeper report, some long odds picks will find themselves in the mix on Sunday, so who have we shortlisted for the RBC Heritage?

The 2021 RBC Heritage Fantasy Sleeper Report

Harris English – 66/1 – The world number 22 has been disregarded by the sportsbooks again despite a much-improved showing at Augusta.

English drove the ball superbly last week, and while that won’t count for a huge amount at Harbour Town remember that confidence flows through a player when their tee shots actually go where they want them to.

He’s a regular visitor to this layout – a sure sign he enjoys it – and a top-10 and two other top-25s here for a player who was in the doldrums for a number of years is a positive sign indeed.

Sebastian Munoz – 70/1 – Without exactly shouting it from the rooftops, Sebastian Munoz is coming back to form.

A standout performer on the PGA TOUR in 2020, the Colombian has found success slightly harder to come by this season, but the signs are promising.

He finished T9 at the Texas Open while ranking third for birdies made, while at The Masters last week his T40 finish was punctuated by finishing tied sixth in that birdies category once again.

The insinuation is that a really strong showing is around the corner if he can cut out some of the bogeys, and at a layout where he performed admirably in June could Munoz add another title to his collection?

Branden Grace – 80/1 – If you had to draw the perfect golf course for Branden Grace to attack, it would look something like Harbour Town.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the South African is a former champion here, with T7 and T11 finishes also in the bank, and he will be confident of something similar this week given his lead-in form.

A winner at the Puerto Rico Open, Grace has since followed up with top-30 turns at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Texas Open, he looks well placed back on his preferred Bermuda to thrive.

Aaron Wise – 140/1 – When he burst onto the scene in 2018, Aaron Wise looked set to be the next big thing.

A winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson, he followed that with top-fives at the Wells Fargo Championship and the Northern Trust, while serving up a top-20 at The Masters the following year.

Things haven’t quite been as good since, but quietly Wise is getting somewhere. Solo second at the Mayakoba, he led the way at the halfway stage of the Honda Classic having played his opening 36 holes in -13.

Wise ranked second for GIR at the Texas Open, so it certainly seems as if his powers are returning.

Patton Kizzire – 160/1 – Another player who is enjoying a low-key return to better form is Patton Kizzire.

Ranking third for GIR at the Texas Open, he banked a top-10 there which franked a much-improved ball striking performance at TPC Sawgrass just prior.

A winner of the Sony Open and the Mayakoba Classic, Kizzire is no stranger to success in wind-affected coastal assignments, and you would expect a decent showing from him this week at mountainous sportsbook odds.
