2021 RSM Classic Fantasy Sleeper Report

Betting on golf is an investigation of human psychology as much as it is biology, and the Houston Open once again proved that to be the case.

In the red corner we had Jason Kokrak, a two-time PGA TOUR winner who had less pressure as the chaser. And then in the blue corner we had Scottie Scheffler, a young man still awaiting his maiden title and who had the added pressure of playing in the final group.

You can probably guess what happened next….

Scheffler bogeyed the first on Sunday, rallied somewhat before making three more bogeys on the back nine to completely derail his chances.

Kokrak, meanwhile, was calm and serene, and his four consecutive birdies on the back nine were enough to propel him to victory – his third in little over the year.

And those are the margins for the humble golf bettor….

But golfing hell hath no fury like a player scorned, and so Scheffler will be thinking of immediate redemption at the RSM Classic – a tournament where he’ll have to play a little bit differently.

Memorial Park was all about bombs off the tee and cuteness around the greens, but there’s a different skillset required on the Seaside course at Sea Island (one of the rounds is played at the Plantation layout, which is as humdrum as it comes).

It’s all about making fairways on the Seaside track, and what’s more the players will have to do so in winds of up to 18mph or higher – no mean feat. And then it becomes something of a putting contest, with these large Bermuda greens pretty difficult to miss. This is classic resort golf, with plenty of birdies thrown in despite the strong breeze.

Scheffler might fancy the job, but he’ll be up against a decent field with perennial Sea Island specialists Webb Simpson and Kevin Kisner, the classy Louis Oosthuizen and the likes of Joaquin Niemann, who looks ready to contend again, also in the conversation.

The last five winners of the RSM Classic all started at odds of 100/1 or longer, and while that makes it sound like something of a lottery, we can still apply some logic and data to come up with a sparkling shortlist for the 2021 RSM Classic.
