The 2021 WGC-Workday Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

What a story that was.

Max Homa, on a golf course where he grew up watching the Genesis Invitational (in its other guises) and eating the legendary Riviera pretzels, goes and outlasts the field as a pro to lift the trophy.

Ironically, the silverware was handed to him by Tiger Woods – the guy he tried (and probably failed knowing Tiger) to get a high five from. Who knows, it might not be the last time that Homa is handed the trophy by his hero here.

It wasn’t plain sailing for the 30-year-old, however, and he perhaps owes a debt of gratitude to Sam Burns and Tony Finau, who both fluffed their lines – the former when closing in on a wire-to-wire victory, the latter when blessed with chances in the ensuing playoff.

The quality of the field and the golf was outstanding at Riviera, and we expect a similar standard this week with the WGC Workday, the WGC at The Concession or whatever it is that they decide to end up calling it!

Either way, there’s a high-class field meeting for the first WGC event of the calendar year, with the likes of Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson and Daniel Berger joining the star-studded field that assembled at the Genesis – Dustin, Rory, Brooks, Xander, JT, Rahm….the list goes on and on.

So what awaits them? Well, that’s a good question, given that The Concession has never been used for a professional event before – it did host the 2015 NCAA Championship, which Bryson won ahead of CT Pan, but that’s all we have to go on.

What we do know is that The Concession, named after an infamous exchange between co-designers Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin at the Ryder Cup in 1969, looks to be a tricky customer based on the images/video published.

The greens are small – you don’t need to be an architect to see that – and their undulations and contours add extra complexity to that puzzle. As if that wasn’t enough, pretty much all of the greens are protected by considerable bunkers too, so there will be plenty of splashing out as well.

Bucket and spades could be the order of the day for much of the week given the extraordinary quantity of sand on the premises, and that is exacerbated by a couple of huge lakes that line the fairways.

With thick tree lines and some narrow fairways, there is plenty of danger lurking, and while we don’t know what a winning score will be it could be a decent examination of all-round golf this week – and that we like.

In high quality fields, we can normally back some premium operators at sportsbook odds of 50/1 or greater – as Homa was at the Genesis – and that offers hope that we could have another sleeper winner on our hands in Florida.

So who is on our sleeper shortlist for the WGC at The Concession?

The 2021 WGC-Workday Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Adam Scott – 50/1 – A closing 67 from the Aussie was a welcome end to an up-and-down week for the defense of his Genesis title.

What was interesting was how well he putted, which has become something of an Achilles heel for Scott of late. If that travels to Florida, and we know how well he strikes the ball usually, that will be a handy combination indeed.

With previous in Florida where he used to reside, the switch to Bermuda is no grave concern and Scott always has the feel of a player who can win these classy events.

Hideki Matsuyama – 50/1 – We expected Matsuyama to thrive last week….spoiler alert, he did not.

However, he did putt well – extremely well in fact by his standards – and so the Japanese ace becomes a person of interest at The Concession.

The best of Matsuyama’s work tends to come on the east coast, and he really is a strong performer on Par 5 holes – naturally, he could be a considerable presence this week if he reverts to type and produces his normal ball-striking excellence.

Will Zalatoris – 60/1 – Whether he’s ‘ready’ to win on the PGA TOUR yet remains to be seen, but one thing that is for sure is that Will Zalatoris can hang with the big boys.

He’s delivered top-10s at the U.S. Open and the Farmers Insurance Open, plus top-20s at the Phoenix Open and the Genesis, and they all came in excellent company too.

While it is a leap into the unknown of sorts with a player unheralded at this level, Zalatoris did win on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020 and so he has the profile of a champion – the suggestion is that he has the game to compete at the highest level too.

Justin Rose – 66/1 – Having undergone swing chances and added new equipment to his bag, it’s been a while since Justin Rose really looked to be somewhere near his best.

But a T2 return from his trip to Saudi Arabia – that was in a quality field, remember – was an indicator that things are improving, and particularly his approach play, which was exceptional.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the Englishman was T23 at The Masters, and while there will no doubt be further bumps on the road a test like The Concession in Rose’s beloved Florida is as good a chance as any to remind PGA TOUR fans of what he is about.

Jason Day – 66/1 – Another player that has embarked on early season swing changes has been Jason Day, and those finally seemed to pay dividends in his T7 at Pebble Beach in his last outing.

The Australian should love a firm and fast Concession course, assuming that’s how it plays, and as his confidence improves so too will his chances of re-entering the winners’ circle.

Another Par 5 birdie machine at his best, if Day’s recent improvements continue he could be a feature in Florida this week.
