Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – 2021 Wyndham Championship

The 2021 Wyndham Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
A string of long odds winners on the PGA TOUR have set the pulses racing ahead of a tournament that has a history of delivering unlikely, sleeper champions.
From Cameron Davis (Rocket Mortgage Classic) and Lucas Glover (John Deere Classic) to Cameron Champ (3M Open) and even Abraham Ancer (WGC St Jude), bettors have been treated to some juicily-priced winners of late.
Ancer’s victory perhaps shouldn’t be that much of a surprise given that he is evidently a top-class player, and even the fact he defeated our 90/1 pick Sam Burns in a playoff at that WGC-FedEx St Jude isn’t enough to tarnish a win that has been a long time coming. Expect more to follow.
But the Wyndham Championship is a holy grail for those who like to throw darts at unlikely winners. Jim Herman was available at 500/1 last year – an extraordinary moment for any that backed him followed when the veteran saw off Billy Horschel to win by one shot.
In years prior the likes of J.T. Poston, Si-Woo Kim and Davis Love III have all triumphed in this event when not expected to, and the leaderboard is historically crammed with unexpected contenders.
But why? Well, the host venue – Sedgefield Country Club – certainly helps. There are no major alarms to be found on this real estate, with minimal rough, a scarcity of bunkers and with water in play on just five holes.
The Bermuda greens, while smaller than the average size, are receptive enough and easier to hold when there’s rain and minimal wind in the forecast – both of which are prevailing conditions according to the early predictions for Greensboro, North Carolina.
Are you getting excited about the prospect of a sleeper winner? You should be….
We talk about motivation a lot when trying to predict golf tournaments, and no matter what you have achieved in the game you would think the chance to win events and make stacks of cash would be motivational enough.
But we know that, sometimes, just banking appearance money alone is enough for some – especially ahead of the FedExCup run-in, and so arguably there’s more at stake for those around the 125 mark in the standings – again, those are largely sleeper-style players that tend to go under the radar.
On a medium-length course where distance is not crucial, simply flushing irons and making putts is the order of the day at Sedgefield CC, and that really does open up this tournament to a myriad of potential champions.
With that in mind, who has made the cut for our Wyndham Championship 2021 sleeper shortlist?

The 2021 Wyndham Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report
Matthew Wolff – 50/1 – For a player who has faced some pretty dark times this season, it’s great to see Matthew Wolff playing some better golf.
A top-20 at the U.S. Open has been followed by a series of appearances where he has thrown in a good round or two, and most pleasing was that his short game was much improved.
Wolff is starting to drive the ball better now too, and as a quality iron hitter – when on song – we have to give the youngster a chance in this field to show how good he is. For a player that’s been in the doldrums, motivation is not an issue.
Erik van Rooyen – 66/1 – For a player that has never quite shown his best on American soil, what a fillip it must have been for Erik van Rooyen to prevail at the Barracuda Championship last week.
To get his hands on that trophy, the South African had to make plenty of birdies, and that will certainly be the order of the day again at Sedgefield.
Van Rooyen must take those good vibes and build on them – he is currently sitting 139th in the FedExCup standings, and without a strong showing in North Carolina his season will come to a premature end.
Let’s hope the Barracuda can act as a useful springboard for further successes….
J.T. Poston – 75/1 – We’re happy enough to take such a meaty price about a player that has won at Sedgefield before.
J.T. Poston was the victor here in 2019, and just a matter of weeks ago at the Barbasol Championship he must have thought he’d added his second PGA TOUR title – in the end he was pipped to the post by Seamus Power.
But Poston spoke defiantly afterwards about his struggles and his road back, and making a pair of 66s last time out at the 3M Open suggests that the penny has dropped for a guy with a decent stack of high finishes to his name in weaker field events.
Patton Kizzire – 75/1 – A prolific birdie-maker that excels with his mid-range irons, Patton Kizzire has the perfect game for Sedgefield.
Weirdly, he has never quite flourished here, but a T13 and a T24 at least hint at the potential that he has at the layout.
Five of his last twelve rounds have been played at 68 or lower, and that shows just how readily Kizzire can go under par – if he strings four solid turns together at Sedgefield, he might just have a chance of lifting the trophy.
Michael Thompson – 150/1 – Here’s a speculative play on a guy who can get into hot streaks of birdie-making.
Five of Michael Thompson’s last eight strokeplay rounds have been played at 68 or better, and that’s indicative of one of the most reliable putters around who can break par with great consistency – particularly on Par 4 holes.
Arguably at his best on Bermuda greens, we can hope that Thompson continues on his upward trajectory and finds that happy knack with the putter – if he can, those 150/1 odds could look ludicrously good value.
