2023 Wyndham Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Lee Hodges is the latest name to enter the PGA TOUR maiden winners’ club this season.

He did it in mightily impressive fashion at the 3M Open too, burying the rest of the field with a show of sublime ball striking to win by some seven shots. Heady days indeed.

He’ll have eyes on the TOUR Championship now to cap a fine season, whereas others in this Wyndham Championship field will be hoping just to make it into the top 70 and qualify for the St Jude next week.

There’s no shortage of motivation for many this week at Sedgefield Country Club but there’s plenty of pressure too, so it will be interesting to see who can handle the rigors of the situation.

There will be no major worries for the likes of Sungjae Im and Sam Burns on the FedEx Cup front, whereas the likes of Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry and Adam Scott – all former major winners no less – are in jeopardy of missing the seasonal finale.

They’ll have to do the business at a Sedgefield layout that can relent to birdies, but it’s one in which strategy and course management tend to trump bombast off the tee – even in soft conditions, as we’re expecting this week with rain forecast for Greensboro.

It’s a short Donald Ross track measuring little over 7,100 yards for its Par 70, of which three are Par 5s – yep, this is a short old layout by PGA TOUR standards, but with some tree-lines and small Bermuda greens the players will still have to be mindful in their work.

Tom Kim laid waste to the track last year, posting a winning mark of -20 and a final round of 61 which featured six birdies and an eagle on the front nine alone.

Sadly, injury has robbed the young Korean of a chance to defend his title, but he’ll be watching on from home – safe in the comfort that he will compete in the FedEx Cup playoffs. But who will join him there?

Normally, it’s accurate strategists that do the business at Sedgefield, with names like Webb Simpson, Kevin Na, Kevin Kisner and Billy Horschel all performing well here. But success is not exclusive to plodders and plotters, although keeping your ball on a tight line is very much the order of the day.

That is the theme of our 2023 Wyndham Championship sleeper report, where we have a quintet of accurate types to hopefully bring home the bacon.

Chris Kirk – 50/1 – When we talk about players that have performed well at Sedgefield CC – Webb Simpson, Kevin Na, Kevin Kisner and co, Chris Kirk also comes into the conversation.

Short and accurate, Kirk has made his living from a high GIR count and being a reliable hand with the flat stick – especially on Bermuda greens, where we find ourselves this week.

Already a winner this season, Kirk brings form with him to North Carolina – T14 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and T21 at the John Deere Classic – plus a best of T11 at Sedgefield.

Harris English – 55/1 – It’s around two years since Harris English was knocking on the door of the world’s top 10 players.

He hasn’t become a bad player since – injuries haven’t exactly helped, and T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T3 at the Wells Fargo this year are reminders of his talent.

Not the busiest of players, English still has a T8 at the U.S. Open in recent memory and a T11 turn at Sedgefield to call upon. His class can take him even higher this week.

J.J. Spaun – 55/1 – As we’ve touched open, neat and tidy tends to be the way at Sedgefield CC, which should assist Spaun’s chances.

His record at this track isn’t the best – that’s factored into his odds, but we’re still willing to give Spaun a chance given just how solid his ball striking tends to be.

His game looked in good order at the 3M Open, where a cold putter condemned him to a T37 finish. Better could be ahead if the switch to Bermuda greens pays dividends.

Matt Kuchar – 80/1 – On paper, Sedgefield CC is the ideal venue for Matt Kuchar, even f he has largely neglected to come here in recent years.

One of the most accurate plodders around, Kooch can thrive in short and tight conditions – top-10s at the Sony Open and Riviera this season evidence of that.

Kuchar produced his best approach play since the Texas Open in April at the 3M Open, and if he can connect the other elements of his game then he could have a good old go at Sedgefield.

Brendon Todd – 90/1 – When golf courses are suitably short and there’s a premium on keeping you ball under control, Brendon Todd comes to the fore.

T2 at the John Deere Classic and Pebble Beach, and T8 at the Wells Fargo, remind us that one of the shortest hitters around can still compete when the conditions allow – as they will at Sedgefield CC.

T10 here in 2021, Todd evidently has the skills required to thrive in this pretty unique test of golf.
