The Sleeper Report: Fantasy Golf Sleepers, Long Shots, and Undervalued Picks for the Dean & Deluca Invitational

The Dean & Deluca Invitational Sleeper Preview

Playoff finishes are always enjoyable for the neutral observer, and with ownership of the two players involved so low among daily fantasy managers few will have had a stake in the shootout between Jason Day and Billy Horschel at the AT&T Byron Nelson last week.

Day missed a regulation four-foot putt to keep himself in the tournament, and this would be the fifth win of Horschel’s career which came on the back of four straight missed cuts.  Who said predicting golf winners was easy…

Given the relative lack of form among the favorites this week at the Dean & Deluca Invitational it might well be a sleeper play who wins out for the third week in a row (Horschel triumphed from the 90/1 mark).

Jordan Spieth, the reigning champion who was also second in 2015, is reeling after two missed cuts, Jon Rahm was MDF in his last start, while Sergio Garcia hasn’t finished inside the top-20 since slipping into the Green Jacket at Augusta a matter of weeks ago.

Course form is of relevance here as is the similarities with last week’s host venue the TPC Four Seasons in Irving.  Both are short Par 70s in breezy Texas, although it has to be said that Colonial Country Club places a greater emphasis on golf ball control and course management.  Fairways are tree-lined, water is in play on six holes and clever bunker placement enhance the challenge further.

Oh, and these are Bentgrass greens that the players will have to deal with, rather than the usual Bermudagrass.

With that in mind, who looks to be the smart sleeper plays at Colonial this week?  Let’s take a look.

The Dean & Deluca Invitational 2017 Fantasy Sleeper Report

Mix and match these players with your usual rosters (or play them separately) to get the most out of your picks this week.

William McGirt – Vegas Odds 60/1 – You sense that McGirt will always perform better on shorter, more technical tracks than all-out power courses, and there is evidence to suggest that’s the case with a T3 at the RBC Heritage followed by an opening round of 67 to lead THE PLAYERS Championship.

His decent showings at Harbour Town and in the Sony Open suggest that this is a player comfortable in the wind, and while his lack of length off the tee can be a problem clearly his ranking of third on Tour for Driving Accuracy should ultimately paid dividends at a course like Colonial; even if his prior form here would suggest otherwise (47-33-21).

James Hahn – Vegas Odds 66/1 – After an excellent week at Byron Nelson there doesn’t seem to be any reason why you shouldn’t get involved with Hahn this week.

He led at various points throughout the week at TPC Four Seasons after a pair of 64s, and while he might be slightly disappointed to only finish T3 that is a handy marker for a continuation this week.

Hahn hasn’t played at Colonial since 2015, where he was unlucky to miss the cut at +2, and you would have to surmise that he is a better player now than he was then.  A two-time PGA TOUR winner, Hahn makes lots of sense this week.

Kyle Reifers – Vegas Odds 80/1 – There are certain players who seem to stick their head above the parapet at certain times of the year, and Kyle Reifers in Texas is one such example.

He’s not somebody you would expect to win an event any time soon, but as far as daily fantasy sleepers go Reifers can accumulate points with the best of them in the Lone Star State.

Looking back to 2015 he has since delivered a T11 finish at the Texas Open, T7 at the Houston Open, T10 at Byron Nelson, and a fifth place return here 12 months ago.  What’s not to like?

Chad Campbell – Vegas Odds 100/1 – Campbell is really short off the tee, and that’s something that when you look at his performance record for the season takes the gloss off a player who really excels on short tracks.

Look at his form this season on courses that are sub 7,300 yards: T13 at the RSM Classic, T6 at the CareerBuilder Challenge, T11 in the Valspar, and then T13 at the Byron Nelson last week.  Factor in a T10 at this track 12 months ago and a rather strong narrative develops!

As mentioned, there is nothing magical about Campbell’s game but he is a reliable performer on short tracks as stats such as 23rd for Driving Accuracy, 45th for GIR, 34th SG: Approach the Green and 7th for Approaches: 100-125 yards testifies.

Sean O’Hair – Vegas Odds 100/1 – The Texan has shown some nice flourishes this season with five top-15 finishes in 15 starts, and the pick of those is perhaps the T5 he delivered at last week’s Byron Nelson.

It’s well documented that Texans tend to bring their A Game when playing on home soil, and it’s no surprise to see O’Hair enjoy himself in front of his fellow man and woman.

He finished 10-18-34 in his three outings in the Lone Star State last season, and looks well placed to build upon that at Colonial this week.
