2019 Shriners Hospital for Children Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

The term ‘regression to the mean’ refers to a phenomenon that is soon reversed and normal order is resumed.

So, from a golfing perspective, that can refer to a player who displays an inexorable rise before disappearing into the ether, or a high-quality player that spends a period in the doldrums.

Those of us who play fantasy golf and play some wagers will have seen both sides of the coin, and in Cameron Champ we have seen a player who has regressed to his mean: seemingly an elite level of performance.

After a long spell in the shadows last season after starting his debut season on the main tour so well, the 24-year-old has returned with a bang this term.

A decent effort last time out fed nicely into a trip to California for last week’s Safeway Open, where the two trademarks of his game – super-long driving and solid putting – were both in evidence.

Indeed, put those two ingredients together and it usually results in a recipe for success.

And so Champ claimed the second PGA TOUR title of his career in little over a year in sublime fashion, seeing off a charge from Adam Hadwin with a birdie on the 72nd hole set up by a 370-yard drive. Wouldn’t it be nice to pull that from the bag when the chips are down….

Onwards we march to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, where a high-quality field including the world number one, Brooks Koepka, will convene.

TPC Summerlin is our host venue, as it has been for this event for years, and this is a venue where all sorts of weird and wonderful characters have won in the past: if you can join the dots between Bryson DeChambeau, Patrik Cantlay, Rod Pampling and Smylie Kaufman you’re a better judge than us!

Found in Nevada to the west of Las Vegas, Summerlin’s standout track sits at roughly 2000ft above sea level, and that has the impact of adding significant yardage to aerial shots. That is something of a double-edge sword: it makes drives absolutely fly, but it can lead to headaches when trying to work out yardages and club selection.

Otherwise, there isn’t too much to concern the players here. Playing 7,233 yards for its Par 71 – remember that altitude though, the course features generous fairways, minimal rough and few bunkers or water hazards to fear. The Bentgrass greens are receptive too, and with only light winds forecast we expect the winning score to be in the region of the -21 that DeChambeau posted in his winning effort 12 months ago.

While two favorites have taken the spoils here in the last couple of editions, prior to that we saw 175/1, 250/1 and 175/1 champions!

This is an event that is ripe for a surprise winner, and with that in mind here are our Shriners Hospitals for Children Open sleepers.

Shriners Hospital for Children Open Fantasy Sleeper Report

Scottie Scheffler – 50/1 – It’s been a fine start to life on the main Tour for Scottie Scheffler, who has secured a pair of top-20 finishes and challenged near the top of the leaderboard in both of his starts.

Seven of the eight rounds he has played have been at par or better – five of which were in the 60s, with a 62, 65 and 66 the obvious highlights.

In just two appearances, the Texan has confirmed the buzz about his game that has carried over from a successful Korn Ferry Tour campaign, and his outstanding ball-striking abilities confirm he is a PGA TOUR event winner in the making.

Dylan Frittelli – 50/1 – The South African has been truly impressive as he embarks on his attempt to establish himself as a PGA TOUR major player.

Followers of the European Tour will already know how good Frittelli can be, but fans Stateside hadn’t really seen anything like his best game until he rather surprisingly won the John Deere Classic earlier in the year.

The world number 92 has kicked on from there, and in both of his starts this season he has been excellent.

He ranked first for Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green at the Sanderson Farms Championship, finishing T6, before being well in the hunt at the Safeway Open last week where his ball-striking was again impeccable.

Chez Reavie – 55/1 – The diminutive world number 27 is back in action following an excellent end to the last season.

He ended his long-standing win drought at the Travelers Championship, and nibbled away until he finished T5 at the TOUR Championship.

His first outing of the new campaign ended with a T33 at the Safeway Open last week, which might not sound overwhelming but came with a ranking of eighth for SG: Approach.

Comfortable at altitude, as evidenced by his T4 finish in the Phoenix Open, Reavie is an excellent price this week.

Matthew Wolff – 60/1 – Given that he has only made seven starts on the PGA TOUR, we don’t quite know how good Matthew Wolff is.

But his victory at the 3M Open, plus two other top-25 finishes, was proof positive that this young man possesses bags of potential.

So that’s what we’re wagering on here – potential – for a guy who has already won on Bentgrass this early in his career, who knows what he will do next!?

J.T. Poston – 66/1 – The all-round game of J.T. Poston is so good that he was able to win a high-quality renewal of the Wyndham Championship at the tail-end of last season.

There are no real weaknesses in his game: Poston is not one of those guys that is sublime from tee-to-green but can’t putt for toffee, and neither is he a brilliant reader of the greens that needs countless attempts to get on the dancefloor.

It’s a formula that, when he clicks, suggests more success is in the offing, and after opening his account for this season with T11 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, Poston might be eyeing an instant return to the winner’s circle at a layout where he was T4 in 2017.
