2018 BMW Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

This has been the summer where Bryson DeChambeau has graduated from geek to chic.

Like some bad Hollywood coming-of-age movie, the young man so often denigrated for his use of science and maths in his shot selection and club choice has blossomed, swan-like, into one of the finest players on the planet.

It takes a supreme sort of character to win back-to-back FedExCup playoff events, and three titles in a single season, and it would be fair to say that DeChambeau has asserted himself as one of the very best in the world with a Ryder Cup place surely now confirmed.

There is no chance for him and the rest of the 70-man field to rest on their laurels, however, as the third playoff event follows this week at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia. The MW Championship will cut the FedExCup field from 70 to just 30 in time for the flagship event, the TOUR Championship, which gets underway on Thursday September 20.

Who’s in danger of missing out? Plenty of big names, that’s for sure, with Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Hideki Matsuyama ranked 24-28 respectively.

There’s a unique test in store for the players this week as they make a rare foray to a Donald Ross course design. He’s responsible for East Lake, host of the TOUR Championship, as well as Sedgefield, home of the Wyndham Championship.

Ross favors layouts which test a player’s course management, with angles of attack all important to the Scot’s philosophy. So, we can expect a tougher, more thoughtful approach to the game this week rather than a ‘he who hits it furthest’ style encounter.

For those of you with long memories, Aronimink will also host the PGA Championship in 2027; get those notebooks at the ready!

There’s plenty at stake wherever you look in the field this week, and that should lend itself to some thrilling golf. But who makes our sleeper slate for the BMW Championship?
