Fantasy Golf Sleeper Report – The Military Tribute at the Greenbrier

2018 Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Fantasy Sleeper Report
The countdown to the British Open is officially on, and in a two week’s time the players will tackle the dreaded Links at Carnoustie.
The European Tour is off doing their Links-style warm-up events, and while some rather handy players have decided to do their prep over in the UK others have decided to stay a bit closer to home.
Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson line up at this week’s Greenbrier Classic just a matter of miles from properties they own, and that pair will be hoping home comforts can help take their performances to the next level. If one of them could win, it would be their fifth combined title of the season.
They face competition from the likes of Tony Finau, Webb Simpson and Russell Henley, but this is an event which has the feeling of a ‘calm before the storm’ about it. Indeed, a rollcall of recent Greenbrier winners includes Danny Lee, Jonas Blixt, Angel Cabrera and Scott Stallings, so it really does feel ripe for a sleeper winner.

Speaking of storms, rain has been forecast this week in West Virginia and more specifically White Sulphur Springs, and that could be a real difference-maker; particularly if a draw bias presents itself. Stay tuned to the forecast throughout the week.
Soft conditions will make The Old White TPC even easier, and this isn’t a difficult stretch by any means at the best of times. Shape your tee shots around the tree lines and you’ll find plenty of room on the fairways, and the larger-than-average greens should prove very receptive.
If heavy rain does fall, this could denigrate into a putting shootout. And that’s good news for sleeper backers, who can ride the train of a hot putter all the way to paying ticket town.

The Military Tribute at the Greenbrier Fantasy Sleeper Report
Danny Lee – Vegas Odds 66/1 – There are just some players in world golf who produce decent performances at the same tracks year in, year out, and Lee is one of them.
The Kiwi’s formline at The Old White reads 9-1-16, and he has also banked three top-25 finishes in his last four starts at TPC River Highlands, and so he can largely be trusted to get the job done at layouts which suit his eye.
There is some good recent form in the locker too, with T7 in THE PLAYERS Championship, T14 in the Fort Worth Invitational and T15 in the Travelers Championship all coming in the past few months.
Anirban Lahiri – Vegas Odds 70/1 – The Indian’s form is travelling nicely at the moment, and the main factor has been a hot putter, which continues to register great numbers on Bentgrass surfaces.
Lahiri gained +1.80 strokes on the greens last week in the Quicken Loans National, and he is carding excellent numbers all over; a key factor behind his run of T9 and T13 finishes in the Travelers and The National.
In his last 20 rounds, Lahiri has fired 15 efforts of 69 or better, and that consistent scoring may just yield dividends for a man who has won 18 times worldwide.
Ryan Armour – Vegas Odds 80/1 – If you can get 80/1 on the previous week’s runner-up in a weak field event then realistically you have to take it.
Armour was in fine fettle from tee to green at Potomac, and a confident player is a dangerous beast indeed heading to the relatively forgiving conditions at The Old White.
He will pepper the greens, and as long as that hot putter travels – he gained +0.98 strokes on the field on the greens – Armour could go one better than in Maryland.
Austin Cook – Vegas Odds 80/1 – Good off the tee and excellent with putter in hand, The Old White should suit Austin Cook.
He finished third in the El Bosque Championship last year, which may or may not be of relevance, and when we have strong putters in mind we look at ‘easier’ tracks for them to exploit, which arguably this is.
Already a winner this season at the RSM Classic, Cook makes plenty of birdies and he should enjoy himself in West Virginia this week.
Wesley Bryan – Vegas Odds 100/1 – Any event where accuracy off the tee is not a pre-requisite for success, players like Wesley Bryan spring to mind.
The 28-year-old generally struggles to find fairways, but the extra room at The Old White should prove beneficial.
And if he can just improve that GIR count, that will allow his generally rock-solid putting motion (31st for SG: Putting) to flourish.
Nine of Bryan’s last sixteen rounds have been 69 or better, and that suggests his best form is just around the corner.
