2018 Quicken Loans National Fantasy Sleeper Report

The Travelers Championship served up a few pointers that punters can take forward with them for the rest of the season.

Firstly, Paul Casey – a supremely gifted golfer – is not comfortable when leading events overnight into Sunday.

Secondly, Bubba Watson is an absolute don, a shoe-in for the US Ryder Cup team and a contender for any event in which he enters while his form is this hot.

Bubba flew up the leaderboard on Sunday to usurp Casey, Russell Henley and all other contenders to claim his third PGA TOUR title in the space of just three months.

If the Travelers had a high-quality feel with Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth taking to the tee, this week’s Quicken Loans National is anything but.

Rickie Fowler, Tiger Woods and Marc Leishman are worthy headliners of course, but the supporting cast who will take to TPC Potomac is anything but headline-making. Kyle Stanley, as defending champion, will be of interest to punters, but to see the likes of Francesco Molinari, J.B. Holmes and Charles Howell III priced at 33/1 or under and, well, you get the idea.

You can forgive the players for not fancying the trip to Maryland, though. This TPC Potomac course has been likened to a US Open track by many visitors, with the renovation work carried out by Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and the likes increasing the difficulty exponentially.

The fairways are around 35 yards wide – that is ten paces less than those of Shinnecock Hills, and the greens are rather small and super-quick; thus being very difficult to hold.

Kyle Stanley’s winning mark was -7 last year, with just 21 players finishing the tournament under par. If you need any further indicator of how complex this layout is, that is it.

So, we’re looking for a very specific breed of golfer this week; let’s take a look who is on our sleeper shortlist:

The Quicken Loans National Fantasy Sleeper Report

Kevin Streelman – Vegas Odds 50/1 – It is at short and fiddly tests like this where we expect Kevin Streelman to thrive, as top-10s in the RBC Heritage and AT&T Pebble Beach testifies.

His formline doesn’t look great on paper, but actually it is sneaky good: nine of his last twelve rounds played have been level par or better.

T17 here on debut 12 months ago, Streelman has the perfect game for TPC Potomac with his ultra-conservative approach. He ranks third on Tour for Bogey Avoidance, fifth for Greens in Regulation and ninth for Par 4 Scoring Average.

Jamie Lovemark – Vegas Odds 50/1 – Lovemark’s third round of 64 thrust him up the leaderboard at the Travelers Championship last week, but he couldn’t quite capitalise as he finished T19.

But it was another decent effort from the 30-year-old, whose formline now reads 19-37-17-MC-10, and this is the kind of event where he is far more likely to break his PGA TOUR duck than in normal weeks.

Lovemark will club down at TPC Potomac, and that should help him find plenty of fairways. His iron game is outstanding, and he plays the Par 4s particularly well wherever he goes.

At a layout where scoring opportunities are few and far between, Lovemark has the game to grind it out and post a decent score when birdie chances arise.

David Lingmerth – Vegas Odds 66/1 – If you are the kind of punter who enjoys ‘value’ bets, then David Lingmerth arguably isn’t in that category.

But in a low-quality field lacking proven champions, the Swede holds appeal in that he has finished first and fifth in his pair of starts at TPC Potomac to date.

Lingmerth is a course horse of sorts – you only need to see his repeated decent form on Pete Dye tracks for evidence of that – and really he should have won here 12 months ago.

He putted really nice on the Bentgrass of River Highlands last week, ad that’s a good sign ahead of a trip to a layout that clearly suits his eye.

Kevin Tway – Vegas Odds 66/1 – With three top-10s in his last five starts, Kevin Tway’s form is travelling across state borders, and his extra power should be an asset at TPC Potomac.

He will take irons off the tee – helping him to find these thin fairways – and that gives him the edge over those taking big clubs out of the bag.

His T5 finish at Colonial is a great sign, as that is another layout where danger lurks at every turn. Having twice played at Potomac already, he has the edge on those taking their first look at this tricky track.

Ryan Blaum – Vegas Odds 100/1 – Some excellent form accompanies Ryan Blaum to Maryland this week, and that alone makes him a must back.

Top-20s in three of his last four starts is a good starting point for your draft, and if we ignore the aberration that was his missed cut in the Fort Worth Invitational then we note that ten of Blaum’s last twelve rounds have been 69 or better.

Ranking 40th on Tour for Driving Accuracy, the 34-year-old should keep the ball in play more than most this week, and with his game clearly in fine fettle that makes him a dangerous proposition at Potomac.
