2018 Wyndham Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

A man of few words, Brooks Koepka continues to let his golf do the talking.

He’s something of a lone wolf on Tour, who doesn’t socialize all that often with his fellow players and who prefers to stay out of the limelight.

It’s a formula that works for him….

The 28-year-old bagged his major trophy at the weekend with a comfortable victory in the PGA Championship at Bellerive. Not even a late Tiger Woods charge could halt his progress, and his win takes him level with the likes of Billy Casper, Hale Irwin, Vijay Singh and contemporary Jordan Spieth on golf’s roll of honor. How many more will he claim?

It’s a week off for many of the game’s big boys, with the FedExCup playoffs beginning in earnest as of next week. On Thursday, the Wyndham Championship will begin at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the general vibe is one of points protection and gains.

The top-125 in the standings qualify for the Northern Trust, and so there are places to be won and lost at Sedgefield. Pressure does funny things to a golfer….

And so there is plenty to look out for this week at a course where birdies will be flying home with gay abandon. Henrik Stenson won this tournament at a mark of -22, and those winning scores have been getting lower ever since the greens were changed to Bermuda grass in 2012.

The Donald Ross layout at Sedgefield is a 7,137-yard, Par 70 with just two Par 5s, but many of the Par 4s are breachable and rounds in the low 60s are commonplace. Indeed, Si-Woo Kim nearly joined the 59 club in his winning effort here in 2016.

It’s a fairly standard course, and the interest comes in the closing holes. The fourteenth is a 500+ yard Par 4 behemoth while the eighteenth is typically the toughest hole on the course and regularly plays over par. That said, holes 13 and 15-17 are among the easiest on the course, so we can expect plenty of movements on the leaderboard throughout the week.

It’s a tough old week for punters, but with a few winners of this event cashing in at 100/1+ we can get a tad excited about our sleepers bringing home the bacon!

The Wyndham Championship Fantasy Sleeper Report

Harold Varner III – Vegas Odds 50/1 – In a field as lacking as this in star quality, classy current form is a real bonus to have on side.

And Harold Varner III has been playing some good stuff of late, with a T7 at THE PLAYERS Championship earlier in the year backed by his three most recent outings: T5 at the Greenbrier, solo sixth in the John Deere Classic and T17 at the Canadian Open.

The 27-year-old opened with a round of 63 here last year on his way to a top-10 finish, and another feather in the cap is a victory in the Australian PGA Championship back in 2017; not many in this field can boast a high quality win like that in recent years.

Julian Suri – Vegas Odds 60/1 – The American has delivered some decent performances on home soil this term, with a top-10 at the Houston Open backed by last week’s top-20 in the PGA Championship, where he ranked fourth for Strokes Gained: Approach.

Suri is one of those modern players who you sense gets into trouble when trying to uncork a huge drive, and so paring down his power off the tee should suit him here; especially as he is such a good iron player.

A full-time member of the European Tour, the 27-year-old finished T2 in the Open de France in July, and picked up his maiden victory at the Made in Denmark roughly a year ago to the day.

Abraham Ancer – Vegas Odds 66/1 – Sedgefield CC has witnessed many a player land their maiden PGA TOUR title, and perhaps Abraham Ancer could be the next fledgling champion.

A pair of top-fives within his last pair of starts suggests the form is in place to challenge, and as a former winner on the Web.com Tour we know that the Mexican has the minerals to get the job done.

He ranked second for Strokes Gained: Tee to Green at the Canadian Open a couple of weeks ago, which suggests that a cold putter stopped him from improving on that top-five finish.

Perhaps a switch to Bermuda greens will provide the catalyst?

C.T. Pan – Vegas Odds 70/1 – The basic foundations of Pan’s game – precision accuracy off the tee, high GIR numbers on approach – should lend themselves to success at Sedgefield.

This consistent performer should enjoy his trip to North Carolina then; as he does at many tracks where his lack of length doesn’t prove a problem.

Eight top-25s in 26 starts this term, with 18 cuts made, indicates just how well the Pan’s game travels, and with FedExCup points to protect

Johnson Wagner – Vegas Odds 90/1 – Quite a few of the North Carolinan natives do well on home soil, and another to add to that list is Johnson Wagner.

He finished T13 at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier in the season to go with a mini formline of 24-5 in this event.

Indeed, that record could read even better as he sat in solo fifth after 54-holes last year – just two shy of Stenson – before capitulating on the Sunday.

A three-time PGA TOUR winner, Wagner is also a solid choice for DFS gamers with 15 cuts made in 20 starts this season.
