Feherty Explains His Reasons For Joining LIV

The beloved commentator David Feherty caused some uproar when he joined the LIV Tour as a broadcaster, but he definitely offers some sense of professionalism to the rival series.

He has the ability to legitimize, his well-recognized voice resonates with golfing fans, and his post-round interviews with the game’s best are legendary, especially with Tiger Woods back in the 2000s.

He has spoken out on his reasons for joining LIV and in true Feherty style, did not beat around the bush.

“Money. They paid me a lot of money.”

“Those saying ‘grow the game?’ Bulls**t.”

We’d expect nothing less from the Irishman with his deadpan address and dry sense of humor.

Perhaps it’s easier for Feherty to acknowledge this as he isn’t in the spotlight as much as the world’s best players and won’t be subject to press conference interrogation.

The ‘grow the game’ line is slowly dying out as we are seeing very little evidence of it. Feherty has all but shut the door on this line that has been parroted by the first few LIV players who signed up, such as Graeme McDowell.

With all the focus on nationality of the teams in the LIV series, I half expect the next crop of defectors to state that they relish the opportunity to represent their country.

For a budding broadcaster, it’s a good gig. LIV is up and coming and has potential to be an interesting spectacle if they cut down on the background noise and sharpen up the edges. Feherty slots in as an established on-course commentator with the freedom to say what he wants, another reason he stated for justifying the move from NBC.

Patrick joined us in May 2022 with a strong passion for the game and a writing style to match. He is a good golfer, originally from Cumbria in the UK, and now living in British Columbia, Canada. He focuses on writing opinion pieces while keeping up to date with LIV Golf, Tour events and Major championships, providing good insights into the professional game. His best golf memories are shooting 72 with a double on 18, running the Golf Society at Lancaster University, and steering them to the first ever Varsity win against rivals York. His favorite club is his Scotty Cameron Newport 2.0, and his favorite event is the Masters!
