‘Flash Mob’ Breaks Out on First Tee at LIV London

Well, LIV London is off to an interesting start. The event allows the tour to come full circle, returning back to the site of the first event at Centurion Golf Club.

Before the golf kicks off, we’ve had early drama with Brooks Koepka and Matt Wolff exchanging terse words regarding ‘wasted talent.’

The motto is ‘golf – but louder,’ and that is definitely what we got today.

Here’s the ‘flash mob’ breaking out on the first tee.

I’m not entirely sure who came up with this idea, but it doesn’t exactly scream ‘golf event.’ Some of the responses offer a critical view:

‘This physically hurt to watch’

‘I can’t tell if they’re trying to put on a parody version of a golf event at this point.’

Eddie Pepperell said:

‘Thought I had a tough day off the tee.’

On the contrary, Paige Spiranac tweeted:

‘People are so grumpy…I think it’s fun’

I was fascinated to see how much LIV would diverge from the more traditional approach at the PGA Tour, but it has to be said there is potential they both converge to become more similar. The Phoenix Open became one of the PGA Tour’s best events, not least due to the chaos on the 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale.

Each is offering a product, and there are a variety of ways to ensure tickets are sold. A huge swathe of golfers on both tours would not be recognized in public, perhaps this sort of thing is appealing to those who fancy spending a day out with family – regardless of the golf.

Is this fun? Do the fans care? Does it make LIV more appealing?
