The TOUR Championship 2020 Tournament Preview

As you are probably aware by now, the TOUR Championship is the annual curtain call for the PGA TOUR season.

The machinations of the FedExCup scoring system are such that we already know how the leaderboard will shape up this week, kind of. Dustin Johnson, who leads the way in the standings, will be given the -10 lead, while Jon Rahm – victor of the BMW Championship last week – will set off the chase from -8.

It would have been fascinating to see these two heavyweights go at it at Olympia Fields last time out, and after they made their way to the first playoff hole anticipation was high. But then Rahm did the ridiculous, draining a 60ft putt at the first time of asking to clinch his fifth PGA TOUR title. DJ could only watch on and laugh.

Will we see a more forceful head-to-head between the pair this week? It’s certainly possible, and as the 2019-20 season grinds to a halt we might just have saved the best until last.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Course Preview

It’s one of the oldest courses on the PGA TOUR rotation and, arguably, amongst the very best too – East Lake GC once again takes on hosting duties of the TOUR Championship.

It’s the perfect venue to sign off the season because it is the ideal test of all-round golf. There is real edge to be found in total driving this week, which will come as no surprise given that Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Xander Schauffele are the last three winners here. A lack of length leaves an uphill task in approaching these long Par 4s, but an absence of accuracy will also leave you chasing your tail out of the rough stuff.

The Bermuda greens are of an average size but come complete with some brutal run-offs, and so anything but precise iron play can leave some pretty nasty chips to be made.

And guess what? You’re not going to win in this illustrious company without having a good week with the flat stick. Like we say, this is the perfect test of all-round golfing excellence.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Outright Winner

This is one of those strangest of weeks where the sportsbooks may just offer you two sets of outright odds – the first relating to the standard strokeplay scoring and the second based upon the unique leaderboard already discussed.

In the latter, you’re not going to get much of a price about Dustin Johnson, but in the former there is still plenty of value to be had in backing the player who is outperforming everyone else on the planet right now.

A winner at the Northern Trust, DJ had a chance to hammer home his advantage at the BMW Championship but just took his foot off the gas – letting Rahm sneak one through the back door. Don’t expect Johnson to be so forgiving this week.

Once more, DJ outperformed the field in ball-striking, and in his last seven starts he has two wins and a pair of runners-up finishes. That is irrepressible form.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Top 5 Finish Pick

Having backed him in this market last week, we have plenty of cause to be disappointed with Daniel Berger’s efforts at the BMW Championship.

But he has all of the tools at his disposal to perform much better at East Lake, where his solid all-round game gives him an edge on many more one-dimensional players in the field.

The switch to Bermuda is always likely to suit a man from Florida, and so we’re expecting bigger and better things from Berger this week at an inflated price.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Top 10 Finish Pick

The last couple of weeks have perhaps witnessed the very best golf of Scottie Scheffler’s career to date.

The young gun tasted his first major top-five at the PGA Championship, and he followed that with a slice of unique history when firing a round of 59 at the Northern Trust.

An eye-catching -4 to close in tough conditions at the BMW Championship is another handy indicator that Scheffler’s form is travelling with him right now, and he will be desperate to sign off the season in fine style.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Top 20 Finish Pick

Given that there’s only 30 players in the field this week, sourcing adequate betting value in this market is difficult. However, let’s take a chance on one of the underdogs this week – Sebastian Munoz.

Here’s a guy who ranks very nicely in the season-long stats for SG: Tee-to-Green, scrambling and birdie average, and so he has the make-up of a player who could thrive at East Lake.

With no cut, expect Munoz’s birdie power to fire him into the top 20.

The TOUR Championship 2020 Match-up to Watch

It would be a huge surprise if Bryson DeChambeau was able to make bomb-and-gauge work at a complex layout like East Lake, and so he is one to avoid this week.

We can take him on in matchups then, and his two likely adversaries – Webb Simpson and Collin Morikawa – both hold appeal. Simpson withdrew from the BMW Championship specifically to prepare for this event, and he will enjoy grinding out a score at this layout.

And Morikawa, while not at his best since landing the PGA Championship, is very obviously one of the best ball-strikers in the world – that skillset will be given full reward at East Lake.

Who to Fade this Week

With a heavily-pregnant wife due to give birth to his first child any moment now, betting on Rory McIlroy this week really is something of a fool’s errand.

The Irishman has confirmed he will withdraw from the event if Erica goes into labor anyway – voiding your bet, and even if he plays all four days you wonder how focused he will be with his hopes of landing the FedExCup all but over.
