Greenbrier Classic Champion Xander Schauffele Has an Interesting Backstory

The Greenbrier Classic had an interesting backstory heading into the tournament after the course had been hit hard by storms. This wasn’t the only cool backstory to come out of the tournament, however, as Xander Schauffele won the title, bringing his own backstory to life.

With a youth movement that has taken over the PGA TOUR this year, it isn’t surprising to see Schauffele, 23, win the championship. But other than being a young, up and coming player on the Tour, Schauffele is also quite an interesting person. Outside of just having one of the coolest names you’ve ever heard, Xander has some traits that most people could only hope to have.

First off, Xander is the physical manifestation of a melting pot. While many people have just one nationality or possibly two through both parents, Schauffele actually has four legal nationalities. He is German and French from his father’s side, Taiwanese from his mother’s side, and American from both of his parents. Schauffele also has ridiculous athletic traits, as his two great grandfathers were star soccer players. His father was also destined to compete in the Olympics as a decathlete until he was injured in a car accident.

While these traits are cool enough to make Schauffele an awesome athlete, the most interesting aspect of Xander’s golf career is the chant that fans yell when he tees off. The classic “get in the hole” and “baba booey” exclamations are getting old and lack original flare. When Xander steps up, however, fans shout out “x gonna give it to ya” giving a nice shout out to rapper DMX.

Being one of the coolest guys on the Tour, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that golf just comes naturally for Schauffele. It is so natural for Xander that his entire swing is based upon feel. In fact, he didn’t watch his own swing on video until he was 18.

“So very natural,” Schauffele said to describe his swing, “Kind of take as much pain off your back as much as possible. Pain-free has been kind of our motto. Just have a swing with longevity.”

While the Greenbrier Classic was Xander’s first win on Tour, his interesting personality along with natural golf skill should keep him in the spotlight for many more years to come.
