Ian Poulter’s Ryder Cup Future Uncertain

Ian Poulter’s dreams of returning to compete in the upcoming Ryder Cup are uncertain, after he has said that he would be out of action with a foot injury for four months.

With the Ryder Cup set to begin on the 30th September, simple maths tells us that the prestigious competition is just slightly short of four months away – leaving the future of Poulter’s Ryder Cup return in the balance of his recovery time.

The Englishman has been suffering from arthritic problems in his right foot, which has led to him missing his last two cuts on the PGA TOUR.

With the 40-year-old being such a, how can you say it… pest to the American team over the years, taking 14 points from 18 matches in the last five Ryder Cups, it is safe to say that his absence would weaken Europe’s side in Hazeltine later on this year.

Poulter has said:

“I am obviously disappointed to be in this situation, especially during a Ryder Cup year.  Right now, rest and rehab take priority.”

Despite this injury, Poulter has never been guaranteed a spot in Darren Clarke’s team- with him currently ranked 85th in the world and having his last win back in 2012, he will have to be reliant on being one of the three captain’s wildcard picks if he wants to play in his sixth consecutive Ryder Cup.

However, earlier this year after the EurAsia Cup, Clarke hinted that he might pick the veteran for the September squad.

He said: “What Lee (Westwood) and Poults have brought to the team room has been priceless.  All of the young kids have listened to them, they’ve all learnt from them and I think it’s been a hugely beneficial week.”

All in all, if Poulter’s rehab is successful and his injury heals within the projected four months, it is safe to say it will be a very last minute decision whether the Englishman will make an appearance in what is already set to be another unforgettable Ryder Cup.
