Jason Day Leaves Adidas for Nike

According to Darren Rovell of ESPN, Nike has signed Jason Day to a new apparel and shoe contract to begin in 2017.

Signing the number one golfer in the world is a huge deal for Nike and will pay Jason over $10 million a year to wear the swoosh. The move to Nike was made possible due to both Nike and Adidas shedding its equipment manufacturing pieces of the business.

Day has re-signed with Taylormade from an equipment standpoint, already re-upping with them. In the past, that would have also meant he would be dressed head-to-toe in Adidas gear, but the two companies are no longer as closely tied as before.

Nike’s timing of this deal after the recent announcement regarding their equipment manufacturing couldn’t be better. It shows they will continue to build a stable of top-tier golfers. And at the same time, Tiger, who built the golf brand for the company, is seemingly finally on his way back to competitive golf and McIlroy is also getting back to better, more consistent play.

Now with Day, Nike becomes that much more relevant on the national stage, despite players swinging non-Nike clubs.

Also, with Jason setting precedence using Taylormade equipment while wearing a Nike hat, you have to wonder who will be the next Adidas domino to fall.

Perhaps a tall, slender man who goes by just two initials and hits the ball a mile?
