Jason Day WGC Mexico Championship

Today, the top 50 golfers in the world will begin their rounds in the first of four World Golf Championship events this PGA TOUR season.  However, the event will notabliy be missing one of the top players in the world.

Jason Day, the current World no. 2 golfer, was forced to withdraw from the tournament earlier this week.  The issue does not seem to be a long-term physical issue, however, as Day cited a double ear infection and the flu for the reason that he will not be in Mexico this weekend.

This could be a missed opportunity for Day, who could have reclaimed the no. 1 ranking in the world this week if he were able to put together a stronger tournament than Dustin Johnson.  This was also an especially good opportunity for Day as he has won two World Golf Championship events in the past.

Unfortunately for Day, this withdrawal is highlights yet another ailment in a long line of health troubles in Day’s career.  In the past five years, Day has missed several PGA TOUR events due to injuries ranging from an ankle sprain, a sore wrist and thumb, vertigo, and multiple back issues.  These health problems seem to be one of the only things that are holding him back from his dominant potential.

Day himself is frustrated that he is unable to play because of these ailments.  He said in a statement announcing his withdrawal that, “I’m truly disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to play in next week’s World Golf Championship-Mexico Championship…I have heard great things about the Mexico Championship and the golf course…I look forward to teeing it up there next year.”

Hopefully, Day is able to return to good health quickly and there will be no other ailments that stop him from participating in events for the rest of the PGA TOUR season.
