John Daly’s Driver from 1991 PGA Championship Up for Sale
Golf, like any sport, has a lot of memorabilia that fans want to get their hands on and Green Jacket Auctions has the most coveted items. One item that just hit the market may make for a nice, cheap investment.
One of the hottest pieces of memorabilia for golf fans are clubs themselves. They live in a player’s bag and they were actually touched and used by a real-life professional. The clubs that sell for the most are ones that are used by players in major championship victories or other big golfing events. Green Jacket Auctions has one of these clubs, as they are now selling the driver used by John Daly to capture the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick.
The Cobra driver was obtained by the auction site after a long stretch of changing hands. Originally, the driver was used by Daly during his rookie season on the PGA TOUR. After winning the Wannamaker Trophy, however, Daly gave the club to golf course architect Peter Dye, the man who designed Crooked Stick. Dye then transferred the club to an associate, who used the driver as his own for awhile before putting it up for auction.

That driver should have a lot of value for a John Daly fan, as this was the club that helped him gain the nickname “Long-John.” Hitting the Cobra well over 300 yards at Crooked Stick, the 25-year old Daly was able to capture his first major championship in his rookie season by shooting twelve-under par. Despite that history, however, the club isn’t as expensive as you’d think.
Currently, Green Jacket Auctions has a starting bid of $1,000 on Daly’s driver. That’s a great price, especially when you consider the price that similar clubs have sold for. For example, Arnold Palmer’s driver from the 1961 Open Championship sold for $80,000. But because the Cobra has been used regularly by others after Daly, it has become nicked and scraped, keeping the value reasonable.
Golden Age on Instagram: “John Daly used a highly unusual kevlar composite head driver to shock the world and win the 1991 PGA Championship. The unknown Daly was the 9th alternate and didn’t even get into the tournament in time to have a practice round. Then Daly used this driver to take Crooked Stick to its knees. John Daly’s actual driver from the 1991 PGA Championship is up for auction and currently has a high bid of $1,610”

With Christmas just a few weeks away, Daly’s driver could be a great gift for the golf fan in your life. Hopefully, the price stays down and someone will be able to get a great steal on a piece of golf history.
