Jon Rahm Coming Into His Own

So far in the new year, golf seems to have been taken over by young guns and first-time PGA TOUR winners. In the past few weeks, we have seen the likes of Justin Thomas and Hudson Swafford coming up with low rounds and big wins. Now it was Jon Rahm’s turn this past weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open.

After being lauded as a can’t miss golf prospect coming out of college, Rahm finally broke through for a victory in his 17th career tournament. Still only 22 years old, Rahm put on a show in the final round to become the youngest player to ever win the Farmers Insurance Open, conquering Torrey Pines in the process.

The competition at Torrey Pines was fierce, as nine different players held at least a share of the lead during Sunday’s final round. Rahm was able to separate himself, however, by making two eagles in the final six holes of his round. That gave Rahm a final round of 65, seven-under par to complete his round. And after the jockeying that occurred earlier in the round, that gave Rahm a three-shot victory over Charles Howell III.

This is not the first time that Rahm has made headlines on the PGA TOUR, despite only graduating from Arizona State in 2016. He finished third in the Quicken Loans National last summer and he also finished third in the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2015 as a junior at Arizona State.

Despite his previous accomplishments, it was exciting for Rahm to win his first PGA TOUR victory. “It was important to keep composure, keep it going, and I’m just so glad I was able to keep my mind on the game and I was able to think clearly,” Rahm said after the victory, “And I’m just so happy it finally happened.”

Now officially a professional golfer, it will be interesting to see if Rahm is able to live up to his potential and continue to carry this momentum into more tournaments the rest of the 2017 season.
