Tiger Woods Rusty in Return
After a 17 month absence, Tiger Woods finally returned to the PGA TOUR this past weekend at Torrey Pines, playing in the Farmers Insurance Open. While it was exciting to see Woods’ name back in the headlines, he could have performed a lot better than he did.
In his first tournament back in action, Woods did not resemble the dominant player that he was years ago but rather the player that has struggled to regain his form. Coming into the Farmers Insurance Open with high hopes, Woods finished his tournament on Friday, after missing the cut.
Woods’ first round didn’t start off terribly, as he closed the front nine at only one over par. He then came out firing on the back nine, birding the first two holes. It all fell apart after that, however, as Woods bogeyed six of his last seven holes, including a crippling double bogey on the 15th. Woods did shape up in his second round, ending with an even par 72, but it was not enough for him to avoid missing the cut.
“Just like everybody, I’m trying to get ready for the first full week in April”
While the results were disappointing for Tiger, he was able to find solace in being able to get back out onto the course and is carrying that momentum with him. “Just like everybody, I’m trying to get ready for the first full week in April,” Woods said after his last round, “That’s where eventually I want to have everything come together. That’s the plan. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to win this golf tournament on the weekend. But I have next week.”
This week, as Tiger was referring, he will be playing in the Dubai Desert Classic. This will be another opportunity for Woods to improve his game and possibly get a win under his belt heading into the Masters in April. Woods still has a chance to become the all-time major winner, sitting only four major championships behind Jack Niklaus, but only five players have won a major at Woods’ age of 41 or older.
With the odds stacked against him, it will be interesting to see if Woods is able to hold off some of the rising young talent on the PGA TOUR and reclaim his dominance for tournaments to come.
