Lowry Good With Shutting People Up, Rahm Doesn’t Want to Talk Sergio

The entire European Ryder Cup team is playing in the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship this week, and many talked about the upcoming tournaments before teeing off today.

Shane Lowry, who was roundly criticized for making the team over Poland’s Adrian Meronk, responded with his best finish of the season last week, coming in third at the Irish Open.

Now, he comes into Wentworth as the defending champion of one of the DP World Tour’s most elite events with a bit of a chip on his shoulder

“[The criticism] didn’t sit very well with me to be honest,” Lowry said. “I feel like, yes, my results have not been amazing this year, but I feel if you purely go down to statistics and go down to the 12 best players in Europe, I’m one of them.

“I didn’t feel like I had to prove anything last week, but if I shut some people up, so be it.”

Jon Rahm, who unofficially takes the baton from Sergio Garcia as Spain’s Ryder Cup representative, was asked about the all-time European points leader and responded with a sigh.

“I think it would be really stupid of anybody not to lean on Sergio García’s experience in the Ryder Cup [if he becomes eligible again],” Rahm said. “I mean, he is the best player Europe has ever had, won the most points and has shown it time and time again. If he were able to be a vice captain, I absolutely would lean on him. Same as we are going to lean on Ollie [Jose Maria Olazabal] this coming Ryder Cup.”

Garcia and many other European players who are now a part of LIV Golf were ineligible for the team after choosing to resign from the DP World Tour instead of pay fines for playing on the LIV circuit.
