Man Makes Millions of Dollars Diving For Golf Balls
Florida resident, Glenn Berger, has discovered a way to make a living based on our inability to stay away from water on the golf course.
Glenn travels to Florida golf courses not to play, but to scuba dive their water hazards and retrieve golf balls to sell back to driving ranges. He estimates that he collects anywhere from 1.3 to 1.7 million balls a year, reselling them for a $1 apiece to ranges.
It all started when Glenn was partially unemployed and stealing golf balls out of a course lake near where he lived in order to make a little money. His conscience eventually got the best of him and he decided to stop stealing and start legitimately working with golf courses. From there the business exploded.
He has also managed to find more than just golf balls while diving in course ponds. In his time underwater Berger has uncovered everything from tables and lawn mowers to golf carts.
While it seems like a pretty easy way to make a buck, the job does come with some risk. Namely, sharing murky water with snakes, turtles, and, yes, alligators. He doesn’t like to talk about alligators, but will say that he has learned how to deal with such an encounter.
Once Glenn finishes up collecting at a course, he runs the rescued golf balls through a chemical bath to clean them up, then bags them back up to sell back to courses and ranges.
