After flirting with the cut through his front nine holes today at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Rory McIlroy took a late surge up the leaderboard finishing with a round of level-par keeping him at 4 under heading into tomorrow’s third round.

The Irishman started the day with a bogey on the opening hole, followed by more on the fourth, eighth, ninth, and eleventh.

With the cut being set at one-under-par, the former world number one gained last minute momentum, birdying four of his last six holes, avoiding the cut and still remaining in contention to defend his Dubai Desert Classic crown.

Despite the late comeback, McIlroy remains six shots off leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello who sits at 10-under par—Rafa had another round of 67, making only one bogey throughout the day.

The Spaniard is closely followed by Ernie Els and Danny Willet on -9, with the Englishman shooting a bogey-free round of 65, making him climb the leaderboard from 29th to 2nd position.

Two shots behind the leader are Chris Wood, Joost Luiten, Andy Sullivan, and Thorbjorn Olesen all at eight under par, with the Alfred Dunhill Links winner shooting the lowest score of the day of 64.

With many still in contention for the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, it is fair to say this weekend’s action will not be one to miss.
