Michael Campbell Fighting Off Retirement Rumors
There have been some reports of Michael Campbell retiring from golf, but his latest statement denies this is the case.
It seems his problems are family related as he has just announced a split from his wife and children;
“On a personal note, I have some sad news. Unfortunately Julie and I have separated. Our children remain our number one focus as we move forwards, as parents first and foremost while remaining both friends and business partners.”
On the golfing front he will miss BMW PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and all the events in=between.
It is a shame that the U.S. Open Champion at Pinehurst #2 in 2005—fighting off the challenge of the worlds best golfer Tiger Woods—will miss this year’s tournament.
Michael explained it like this;
“As I do not feel that I am either fully physically or mentally ready to play tournament golf at the highest level, after much deliberation, I have decided not to play in the BMW PGA Championship, the US Open or the events in between. I want to get back to my best and I believe this is the best strategy to achieve this. I look forward to seeing you all out on the course later in the summer!”
All Kiwi’s look forward to Michael returning to the best form he can, we saw him win the New Zealand Open in 2000, at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club.
The General Manager of the club Leo Barber recently recalled that Cambo performance;
“When he was good he was great and one of his greatest moments on New Zealand soil was right here on our links in 2000 when he birdied a blistering five of his last seven holes, and then went birdie, eagle in the playoff of overcome Craig Perks. Like many of our members I suspect, I was lucky enough to witness his charge that day and upon reflection it still remains one of the most thrilling pieces of live sport I have ever experienced.”
